Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring requires compatible stair nosings for a seamless, safe finish. Here's how to choose the right nosings for your vinyl installation.
The Vinyl Challenge
Vinyl and LVT are typically 2-6mm thick, creating a specific set of requirements:
Thickness Accommodation
Nosings must accommodate the vinyl thickness, either through:
- Rebated channels that accept the vinyl edge
- Ramp sections that transition from vinyl to nosing
- Flexible lips that sit over the vinyl
Adhesive Compatibility
Self-adhesive nosings must bond well to both vinyl and the substrate beneath.
Colour Matching
With vinyl available in countless colours and patterns, nosing colour matching becomes important.
Nosing Types for Vinyl
- Self-Adhesive Flat Bar – Simple, low-profile option for residential stairs. The vinyl butts up against the nosing.
- Stair Nose Moulding – Purpose-made profiles with a rounded edge. Often available from flooring manufacturers to match their ranges.
- Metal Nosings with Vinyl Insert Channel – Aluminium nosing with a groove to accept the vinyl edge for a seamless transition.
- Full Vinyl Nosing – Heavy-duty moulded vinyl nosings for complete vinyl stairs. Must have sufficient slip resistance.
Installation Tips
- Install the nosing before the vinyl gets too close to the edge
- Leave a small expansion gap where vinyl meets nosing
- Use compatible adhesive—some vinyl adhesives don't bond well to metal
- Consider a primer on porous substrates
Commercial Considerations
For commercial vinyl installations, specify:
- Slip-rated metal nosings over vinyl
- Coved bases where vinyl meets walls
- Welded seams for hygiene
