Before You Begin
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or loose material

Aluminium Nosing Installation
Professional installation guide for aluminium stair nosings
Surface Preparation
Clean the stair edge thoroughly. Remove any old adhesive, paint, or debris. The surface should be dry and free from dust. For concrete stairs, ensure no loose material is present.
Measure and Mark
Measure the width of each stair tread. Mark cutting lines on the nosing using a pencil. Remember to account for any walls or skirting boards at each end.
Cut to Size
Using a hacksaw or mitre saw with a fine-tooth blade, cut the nosing to length. File any rough edges smooth. Always wear safety glasses when cutting.
Apply Adhesive
Apply a continuous bead of epoxy adhesive to the back of the nosing, focusing on the areas that will contact the stair. For screw-fixed nosings, pre-drill holes at 300mm intervals.
Position and Secure
Press the nosing firmly into position, ensuring it overhangs the stair edge equally along its length. Apply pressure for 30 seconds. If using screws, insert and tighten. Wipe away excess adhesive immediately.
For best results, use a spirit level to check the nosing is straight before the adhesive sets. Keep stairs clear of foot traffic for at least 24 hours.
GRP Nosing Installation

Surface Preparation
GRP nosings require a clean, sound substrate. Remove any oil, grease, or surface contaminants. For outdoor installations, ensure the surface is completely dry.
Measure and Cut
Measure carefully and mark cutting lines. GRP can be cut with a fine-tooth saw or angle grinder with a masonry disc. Always wear a dust mask when cutting GRP.
Pre-drill Fixing Holes
GRP nosings typically require mechanical fixing. Pre-drill holes through the nosing at 300mm centres using an appropriate drill bit. Countersink if required.
Apply Adhesive and Fix
Apply polyurethane adhesive to the back of the nosing. Position on the stair edge and secure with appropriate fixings (masonry screws for concrete, wood screws for timber).
Finishing
Check all fixings are tight and the nosing is secure. Clean any excess adhesive with white spirit. Allow 24-48 hours before heavy use.
GRP nosings are ideal for outdoor and industrial applications due to their excellent slip resistance and durability. Always use stainless steel fixings for outdoor installations to prevent corrosion.
PVC/Vinyl Nosing Installation

Temperature Check
PVC nosings are easier to work with at room temperature (18-25°C). If stored in cold conditions, allow them to acclimatise for 24 hours before installation.
Clean and Prepare
Clean the stair edge with a suitable cleaner. For vinyl flooring, ensure the nosing colour matches. Remove any protective film from the nosing.
Measure and Cut
PVC nosings can be easily cut with a sharp utility knife or fine-tooth saw. For curved cuts, score and snap or use scissors for thin profiles.
Apply Contact Adhesive
Apply acrylic contact adhesive to both the nosing and the stair edge. Allow to become touch-dry (usually 10-15 minutes) before joining.
Press and Bond
Carefully align the nosing and press firmly into place. Use a roller or apply pressure along the entire length to ensure full contact. The bond is immediate but reaches full strength in 24 hours.
For a seamless look, use nosings from the same manufacturer as your vinyl flooring. Many vinyl nosing profiles are designed to integrate perfectly with specific flooring ranges.
