UK building guidance (Approved Documents K & M, BS 8300) says a stair nosing should contrast visually with the step — a difference of at least 30 LRV points (Light Reflectance Value, 0 = black, 100 = white). Pick your floor and a nosing insert colour below to check instantly.

1. Your step / floor covering

Choose the closest match, pick a custom colour, or type the LRV from your flooring datasheet.

2. Nosing insert colour

Typical LRVs for our anti-slip insert colours. Always confirm the exact figure on the product datasheet before final specification.

The rules in brief: Approved Document M and BS 8300-2 recommend the nosing contrasts with the tread and riser by ≥ 30 LRV points. Approved Document K advises the contrasting strip is 50–65 mm wide on the tread and 30–55 mm on the riser. Colour-picker LRVs are screen approximations (calculated from sRGB relative luminance) — for final specification always use measured LRVs from the flooring and nosing datasheets. Need help choosing?
