Solid Brass Nosings and Trims

Description

Solid brass is specified for stair edges where appearance leads. Unlike brass-effect anodised aluminium, these profiles are machined from solid material, so the colour runs all the way through and cannot wear off at the point where feet land — which is exactly where a brass-effect finish fails first.

Solid brass against brass-effect

The distinction matters more on a stair than anywhere else in a building. A brass-effect coating on aluminium is a surface treatment a few microns thick, applied to the part of the floor that takes the most concentrated abrasion in the building. On a busy stair it wears through to silver at the leading edge within a few years, and there is no repair short of replacement.

Solid brass wears into itself. The profile gets thinner over decades rather than changing colour, which is why it survives in buildings that have had the same stairs for a century.

Patina, or polished

Left unlacquered, brass develops a warm patina over years of use, darkening in the low-traffic areas and staying bright where feet fall. That contrast is the traditional look in period properties, members' clubs, boutique hotels and heritage restoration.

Where a consistent bright finish is wanted, polished and lacquered profiles hold their colour. The trade-off is that lacquer eventually wears at the tread edge and the patina then develops unevenly, so lacquered brass suits lower-traffic and decorative applications better than a main staircase.

The range

Ribbed tread nosings in 62mm, 71mm and 89mm widths, in bullnose, square front, ramped and raked-back profiles, plus matching floor trims and thresholds so the detail carries through from stair to landing.

Machined ribs across the tread provide the slip resistance, so no separate PVC insert is needed and the look stays clean — which is usually the point of specifying brass. Custom lengths from 250mm to 2800mm.

Slip resistance and where brass is appropriate

Be realistic about this. Ribbed brass gives moderate slip resistance from its machined profile, and it performs well dry. It does not match an aluminium profile with a carborundum insert, and it does not approach GRP in the wet.

In the UK, slip resistance is measured by the pendulum test to BS 7976, now BS EN 16165, and the HSE benchmark is PTV 36 or above in the wet. On an entrance stair, an external step or anywhere that gets wet underfoot, ask for the pendulum figure before specifying brass on appearance alone. For interior stairs away from entrances it is generally a sound choice.

Contrast and compliance

Brass against timber or stone often measures poorly for contrast, because the tones are closer than they look. Where the building is non-domestic:

• Approved Document M is the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band across tread and riser.
• BS 8300-2:2018, referenced by Part M rather than being law itself, recommends at least 30 points of Light Reflectance Value difference between nosing and tread.
• Approved Document K covers stair geometry — going, rise and nosing projection, 25mm being the figure to work to.

Check the figures with our LRV contrast calculator before committing. In listed and heritage buildings, where contrast requirements and conservation intent can pull in opposite directions, that measurement is worth having in writing.

Fixing and care

Brass is dense and hard, so pre-drill and countersink properly — it does not forgive an over-driven screw the way aluminium does. Use brass or stainless fixings; plated steel screws will corrode against brass and stain the profile.

For upkeep, unlacquered brass needs nothing at all if you want the patina, or a proprietary brass polish if you want it bright. Do not use abrasive cleaners on lacquered profiles, and keep polish off the machined ribs — filling them reduces what slip resistance the profile has.

Frequently asked questions

Is solid brass better than brass-effect aluminium?
On a stair, materially yes. Brass-effect is a surface coating that wears through to silver at the leading edge, which is the first place it is subjected to abrasion. Solid brass keeps its colour because the colour is the material.

Will brass tarnish?
Unlacquered brass develops a patina, darker where it is undisturbed and brighter where feet fall. Many specifiers want exactly that. If you want a consistent bright finish, choose lacquered, and accept that the lacquer wears at the tread edge in time.

Is brass slip resistant enough for a commercial stair?
Ribbed brass performs adequately dry on interior stairs. It is not the right choice for entrance stairs, external steps or wet areas — ask for the pendulum figure and compare it against the 36 PTV wet benchmark before specifying.

What widths are available?
Ribbed tread nosings in 62mm, 71mm and 89mm, with custom lengths from 250mm to 2800mm. Matching floor trims and thresholds are available so the detail continues onto landings.

Does brass need a separate anti-slip insert?
No. The slip resistance comes from ribs machined across the tread, which keeps the appearance uniform. That is usually why brass is chosen over an insert-carrying aluminium profile.

Which fixings should I use?
Brass or stainless, countersunk, into properly pre-drilled holes. Avoid plated steel — it corrodes in contact with brass and stains the profile around every fixing.
