Aluminium Stair Nosing 44x23mm Ribbed Anti-Slip Step Edge Trim

If the step edges on a staircase have started to wear, chip or fray, this 44mm anodised aluminium stair nosing is the slim way to put a hard, defined edge back on them. It is an angle profile: a 44mm top surface that sits on the tread at the very front edge, and a 23mm leg that turns down over the nose to cover the top of the riser. The top face is finely ribbed across its full width to give some bite underfoot. At 23mm the front face is a little over half the depth of the tread plate, so you get edge protection and a clear visual line without the bulk of a commercial step-edge bar. Anodised silver or gold, five stock lengths, screw-fixed through holes that are already drilled and countersunk.

Why it works

Anodised, not painted

Anodising converts the outer skin of the aluminium into a hard oxide layer instead of laying a coating on top of it. That matters most on a stair nose, which takes the concentrated load of every single footfall: a painted or powder-coated finish wears through at exactly that point and starts to look shabby within a couple of years, whereas the anodised layer is part of the metal and wears at the same rate as it.

The ribs are the grip

Fine longitudinal ribs run the whole 44mm width of the top face. They break up what would otherwise be a smooth metal surface at the one point on a staircase where a foot is most likely to skid. The supplier sells the profile as an anti-slip ribbed tread, and that is the correct way to read it: no pendulum value, PTV, R rating or other slip test result is published for this line, so the ribbing is a practical grip texture rather than a certified figure. If your specification calls for a tested slip value, choose a profile that publishes one.

Slim enough to retrofit

Because the profile sits on top of the finished tread rather than being built into it, you can fit it to a staircase that is already carpeted, laminated or covered in LVT without lifting anything. The 23mm leg is shallow enough to sit over a normal riser lip rather than standing proud of it, which is why it reads as a trim rather than an add-on.

Where it is used

Domestic staircases in houses and flats, particularly where a carpet or laminate covering meets a timber tread and the nose has begun to wear. Communal stairs in small blocks of flats, and hallway, office and shop steps carrying everyday rather than heavy industrial traffic. It is an interior profile. The supplier lists it for carpet, laminate and LVT floor coverings and publishes no external, weathering or UV data for it, so we do not recommend it for outdoor steps, patios or porches.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Silver is the safer match against grey, white and cool-toned carpets and against most laminates. Gold reads warmer and sits better with beige and brown carpet, oak and brass ironmongery. Both are anodised, so neither will chip back to bare metal at the nose.

Length. Check the actual millimetre figures rather than the rounded names: the 0.9m option is 895mm and the 1.8m option is 1790mm, so if your staircase is a full 900mm wide it is the 1000mm length you want to cut down, not the 895mm. A standard domestic flight is usually 750–900mm wide, which the 1000mm length covers with a trim. The 2700mm length is the economical choice when you are doing several steps at once, or for wide communal stairs.

Availability. Silver comes in all five lengths. Gold is made in 1000mm, 2000mm and 2700mm only, so if you need gold on a narrow flight you will be cutting a 1000mm length down.

Installation, use and care

Measure each tread individually — stair widths are rarely identical from top to bottom — and cut to length with a hacksaw and a fine metal blade, or a chop saw with an aluminium blade, then file the cut end smooth. Set the profile with its turned-down leg hard against the riser face, mark through the existing countersunk holes, drill pilot holes and fix with the four screws supplied. On carpet, tuck the pile under the back edge before fixing. Clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring cream and solvent cleaners, all of which will dull the anodised surface.
