Aluminium Stair Nosing 62x32mm Square Edge Cut to Any Size

The same square-edge aluminium stair nosing as our stock-bar listing — 62mm tread, straight 32mm front leg, 5.0mm gauge alloy 6063 T6 — but cut to whatever length your flight actually needs. Enter the measurement in millimetres, anywhere from 700mm to 3200mm, and every piece is cut to it with a ±5mm tolerance. Priced per metre, so you pay for what you order and nothing more.

Cutting to size is worth it on any flight where the goings are not all the same width — which, on a refurbishment, is most of them. Ordering to the millimetre is the difference between a clean line into each stringer and a row of visible cut ends.

If your going is close to a standard 1m or 2m bar, the stock-length version of this square edge nosing is usually the simpler order.

Why fitters choose this profile

The flat front is the point. Where the going and the riser already meet at a sharp arris, a square nosing sits tight against both faces instead of bulging over the edge the way a bullnose does. On a clean modern stair that is the difference between a step edge that looks detailed and one that looks retrofitted.

5mm gauge, so it stays flat. On a stair edge that thickness is the difference between a nosing that holds its line under load and one that dishes between fixings after a couple of years.

The insert carries the slip resistance. The tread plate is recessed for a full-width insert that sits proud of the metal — that is what your foot lands on. Six carrier finishes, not the usual three. Black anodised, bronze and light bronze sit alongside mill, satin and polished, so the step edge can match ironmongery and door furniture rather than defaulting to a silver line across every tread.

Choosing the right option

Finish is the aluminium carrier — the metal around the insert and down the front leg. Colour is the insert sitting in the channel, which is why some combinations read as two metal names. Mill aluminium is the untreated extrusion and the cheapest of the six; satin and polished are anodised and hold their appearance better in a shared stairwell; black anodised, bronze and light bronze exist for appearance rather than performance.

Castellated PVC is the default insert and carries the highest wet figure of the four families — keep smooth textured away from entrance flights. If the stair is external, or takes heavy traffic and impact, this is the wrong profile: there is a build in mill aluminium with a glass-fibre reinforced (GRP) insert for those conditions, and we will quote it.

Installation, use and care

Measure each going before ordering and allow for the ±5mm cutting tolerance — if you want a tight fit into a stringer, order 3–5mm under and take up the difference with the insert. Drill and screw-fix the tread plate to the substrate with size 8 screws at regular centres; on timber steps the profile can be rebated so the plate finishes flush. Fit the nosing before the floorcovering is dressed up to the back edge, then trim the covering to abut the profile. Clean with a neutral floor cleaner and a damp mop; keep abrasive pads and solvent cleaners off the anodised and bronze finishes, which they cut through to bare aluminium.
