Description

Stair goings are never a round number

Measure a flight and you get 843mm, or 1,124mm, or twelve treads that are all supposed to match and do not. Buy stock bars and every one of them has to be cut on site: a grinder, a burred edge, swarf over the treads, and an offcut too short to use anywhere else. This listing works the other way round. Take the figure off your setting-out, enter it in millimetres anywhere between 700mm and 3200mm, and each nosing arrives cut to that length. The rate is the same per metre as our 1 metre stock lengths, and the cutting costs nothing.

The profile

Two inserts, not one

This is the 66 x 55mm square-front aluminium nosing with a second, narrower insert set into the vertical face. Most nosings only mark the tread, which serves anyone walking down. The 13mm riser highlight marks the step for anyone climbing the flight, or standing at the foot of it looking at a run of risers. The manufacturer states the riser insert can be colour matched to the tread infill, helping buildings meet visual contrast requirements in line with Equality Act 2010 guidance; here the two are separate options, so you can match them or deliberately break the match.

A gauge that feathers into the floor

The extrusion is aluminium alloy 6063 T6, 4.25mm thick at the nose and ramping down to 1mm at the back edge. On refurbishment work that taper is the point: the thin trailing edge meets sheet vinyl, LVT or laminate without standing proud enough to catch a heel, a castor or a mop head.

Slip resistance you can quote

The manufacturer publishes slip resistance per infill, not for the profile as a whole: castellated PVC at SRV Wet 76 / Dry 85, Olympic Grip at SRV Wet 71 / Dry 102, smooth textured PVC at SRV Wet 56 / Dry 65, and the aluminium infills at SRV Wet 54 / Dry 82. Castellated PVC is the workhorse and has the best wet figure of the group. The aluminium infills are chosen for appearance, so keep them off the busiest routes.

Measuring for a cut order

Number the steps from the top of the flight down, and note the floor levels, landings and where one flight becomes another, so the cutting list matches the building. Measure every tread rather than assuming they match, and order each one at its own width. Where a stair has open strings, measure 50mm oversize and trim the overhang on site. That is the manufacturer's own guidance, and it is what stops a cut order arriving 10mm short on the third step.

Choosing the right option

Start with contrast, because it drives both insert choices. The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for every colour, and the usual approach is to pick a tread infill far enough from the LRV of the floor covering that the edge reads clearly. Black castellated is LRV 4.25 at the dark end, Light Grey 12.33 in the middle, and Polar Grey 42.53, Yellow 54.91 and White 84.22 at the light end. Yellow is the usual choice where a stair has to be conspicuous rather than discreet. Then the riser highlight, matched or contrasting. Then the carrier: Satin Aluminium is the even-toned anodised surface, Mill Aluminium the untreated finish, which costs a little less.

Installation, use and care

Set each piece out dry first and check the tapered back edge meets the floor covering cleanly across the full width. Fix with size 6 screws at regular centres, no closer than 50mm to either end, onto a substrate that is sound, dry and level. A bed of grab adhesive alongside the screws stops the drumming you get from a mechanically fixed profile on a hollow tread. Clean with a damp mop and neutral detergent; avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on the anodised finish. Worn inserts can be replaced without lifting the carrier.

Ordering and delivery

Enter the finished length in millimetres and the price updates to that length. Cut pieces are made to your measurement, so they are non-returnable except where faulty: check the figures before you order. Interior stairs only. Free colour samples are available.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the cut?

Each length is cut to within 5mm of the figure you order. If you need a tighter tolerance, say so in the order notes and we will confirm before cutting.

My treads are all slightly different. What do I order?

Order each step separately at its own measured width. That is what the cut-to-size service is for, and it beats buying to the widest tread and trimming the rest on site.

Cut to size, or a stock length?

The rate per metre is identical, so it is purely about who does the cutting. If your treads are near a round metre and you are happy to trim, the stock listing is simpler. If the goings are awkward, buy them cut.

Can this be used outdoors?

No. The manufacturer specifies it for interior situations only. Do not use it on external steps, entrance treads exposed to weather, or anywhere subject to standing water or frost.
