A twin-insert square-edge nosing for a 93mm tread

When a stair has to carry real traffic and still satisfy an access statement, a single anti-slip band on a narrow tread plate starts to look thin. This profile puts two PVC insert channels across a 93mm tread plate, so the contrast zone a descending user actually sees is far deeper than a single-channel nosing gives you, and there is twice the anti-slip surface underfoot at the point where a foot lands. The front face drops 38mm down the riser at its deepest point. It is extruded from 6000-series aluminium alloy at a 3.5mm gauge, with a square front for square-nosed steps and a ramped rear edge so vinyl or lino finishes up to it without a lip.

You choose the insert colour and the metal finish separately, which is what lets you hit a contrast target without giving up the look the scheme was drawn around.

The manufacturer publishes this badge against this profile on its own technical artwork, and places it in its Standard range. Its Domestic range is labelled “not building regs compliant” and carries no badge; this profile carries it.

What the guidance asks for. Approved Document K requires step nosings to be made apparent using a visually contrasting material — a minimum of 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser in buildings other than dwellings (1.7a), and 50–65mm on the tread with 30–55mm on the riser in the common access areas of buildings containing flats (1.10a). Approved Document M treats visual contrast as adequate where the light reflectance value of the two surfaces differs by more than 30 points.

How this profile measures against it. The tread plate is 93mm and carries two contrasting bands rather than one, which is a materially wider contrast zone than a single-channel nosing offers. The front face is 38mm at its deepest, which sits inside the 30–55mm riser band in 1.10a but under the 55mm minimum in 1.7a — where that clause applies the riser contrast has to come from the surrounding construction or a deeper riser-highlight profile, and we will quote one. The contrast itself is your choice of insert against the floor covering; we publish the manufacturer's LRV for all 19 colours so you can hold the 30-point difference deliberately. Compliance is a property of the finished installation and is signed off by Building Control or your access consultant, not by the nosing on its own.

Why it works

Two bands do more visual work than one

A stair edge only helps if it reads from above on the approach. Two separate insert bands across a 93mm tread give a wider, more emphatic band of colour than a single strip on a 70mm plate, and the bare metal rib between them adds a second edge that catches the light. The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for all nineteen insert colours, running from Premium Black at 4.48 to White at 73.69, so you can build the difference deliberately rather than hoping a mid-grey happens to contrast with a mid-grey floor.

Tested slip performance, as the manufacturer states it

The manufacturer's stair nosing safety documentation pack includes a BS 7976-2 pendulum test by Floor Safe Ltd (report FS10174, 11 September 2015, Four-S slider). It reports 70 PTV dry and 58 PTV wet, both classified low slip potential against the HSE and UK Slip Resistance Group scale, where 0–24 is high risk, 25–35 moderate and 36 or above low. The report describes the tested surface as “Stair Tread - Linished”, so it is the abraded aluminium that is identified rather than explicitly the PVC insert. We carry the figures as the manufacturer states them; we have not tested the profile ourselves.

Two wear parts, both replaceable

Each insert sits in its own channel and lifts out. On a flight that has worn one band flat, the inserts are what get renewed — the aluminium carrier and its fixings stay where they are. That is the whole reason to specify a channelled nosing over a one-piece moulded edging.

Where it's used

Education and healthcare stairwells, office and civic circulation, transport and retail, apartment and student accommodation common stairs, and back-of-house steps that take trolleys. It suits any square-nosed step running vinyl or lino. Where the step nose is raked back or rounded, the geometry is wrong — use the matching raked or bullnose profile instead.

Choosing the right option

Start with the step. This profile is cut for a square step nose; on a raked step it sits proud at the front and leaves a void behind the face.

Then choose the inserts on contrast rather than taste. Take the light reflectance value of the floor covering running up to the nosing and pick an insert at least 30 points away from it — Premium Black (4.48), Dark Blue (5.06) or Dark Green (7.96) against a pale floor; White (73.69), Oyster (58.10) or Yellow (55.35) against a dark one. Both channels take the same colour. Hazard, the black and yellow band, is for steps that have to be flagged as a hazard in their own right: plant rooms, loading bays, a single step in a level corridor.

Finish last. Mill Finish is the standard and much the most economical; the coloured and mirrored finishes are specified to match ironmongery or balustrade. Measure the widest step and take the next stock length up — all three cut down on site.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a clean, sound, dry substrate: drilled and screwed through the tread plate into plugs, or bonded with a construction adhesive where drilling is not wanted. On a refurbishment the covering is laid up to and over the ramped rear edge. Cut to length with a fine-tooth blade and de-burr the ends. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent, and keep abrasive pads, solvents, bleach and acidic cleaners away from both the inserts and the coloured finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a different colour in each channel?

Not as a stock line. Both channels take the same insert colour on this listing. If a two-tone build is what the drawing calls for, contact us and we will price it as a special.

Why is Hazard so much dearer here than on a single-channel nosing?

The manufacturer applies its Hazard surcharge per channel, and this is a double-channel profile, so it carries twice the per-metre uplift a single-channel nosing does. We carry it through from the same published list as every other option.

Will it take a grit insert for an external step?

The manufacturer states the profile accepts its Exterior insert, a GRP grit band made for weather exposure. Those are not on this listing — ask us and we will quote that build.

Are the inserts replaceable?

Yes, both of them, without lifting the extrusion. Order replacement inserts by length and colour.
