Description

A tread extender solves a specific and awkward problem: a stair whose going is too shallow. Older buildings, converted lofts and plant access stairs frequently have treads that no longer meet the depth a modern risk assessment expects, and rebuilding the flight is rarely an option. This 82.5mm aluminium extender adds usable depth to the front of each tread and carries a carborundum grit insert across the new leading edge.

What it actually does

Fixed to the existing going, the extender projects forward to increase the effective tread depth, giving the ball of the foot more to land on. Because the added surface is the part people step on first, it is also the part that must grip, which is why the carborundum band runs along it. It is a retrofit answer, not a structural one: it does not change the rise, and it will not turn an unsafe stair into a compliant one on its own.

Why carborundum

Aluminium oxide grit in a resin matrix is the hardest of the common anti-slip infills. It does not burnish smooth under footfall the way a ribbed PVC insert does, and it cannot peel like a bonded tape. On a projecting edge that takes the first contact of every step, nothing softer lasts.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Mill is plain untreated aluminium for industrial and back-of-house stairs. Satin is anodised and holds its appearance in a public area.

Drilling. Undrilled lets you set fixings out on site to suit the existing tread construction, which matters on a timber stair where you need to hit solid material. Pre-drilled is faster on a long flight.

Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece, or use the cut-to-size version for anything between 250mm and 2750mm.

Installation, use and care

The existing tread must be sound where the extender is fixed; on timber, fix into solid material rather than a worn nosing lip. Fix at roughly 300mm centres. Check the resulting projection against the flight as a whole so every step gains the same depth, since an inconsistent going is more hazardous than a uniformly shallow one. Clean with a stiff brush and water; avoid acid and solvent cleaners.
