Aluminium Welded Corner Angle for Open Landing Edges, 360 x 360mm

Fabricated aluminium corner angle for the open edge of a landing, gallery or mezzanine floor. Two 360mm legs of angle section are welded at the corner and dressed back, so a run of landing edge trim turns the corner in one piece instead of relying on two mitres cut on site.

Priced per angle. Choose 90 degrees for a square step or 83 degrees for a rake back step, in the same three gauges and two finishes as the straight trim.

90° or 83°?

• 90° - Square Step - for a square step, where the two landing edges meet at a right angle.
• 83° - Rake Back Step - for a rake back step, where the edge is slightly splayed rather than square.

If you are not sure which you have, hold a steel square into the corner on site. A rake back step shows a visible gap at the back of the blade; a square step closes on it.

Which gauge do I need?

The gauge is the depth of the rebate behind the upstand, and it has to match the thickness of the floorcovering going into it. Get it right and the covering finishes dead flush with the top of the trim. Too shallow and the covering stands proud of the metal and wears at the edge; too deep and you are left with a lip that catches a toe and a vacuum head.

Measure the covering itself, not the underlay, and if you are between sizes take the deeper gauge and pack up rather than the shallower one.

Why not just mitre it on site?

Because a site mitre in aluminium opens. Two cut ends butted at a corner rely on the fixings alone to stay closed, and the first time the building moves or a trolley catches the corner, a hairline gap appears at the most visible point of the whole landing. A welded corner is one piece of metal: there is nothing to open.

Fitting

1. Set the corner pieces out first and fix them, then run the straight lengths into them.
2. Screw down through the horizontal leg, countersunk, at roughly 300mm centres and close in to the corner itself.
3. Match the gauge to the straight trim so the rebate lines through and the covering finishes flush all the way round.
4. Dress the floorcovering into the rebate last, working the corner carefully so the covering sits down onto the ledge on both legs.

What is this?

A ready-made corner for a run of landing edge trim. It saves cutting two mitres on site and, more to the point, it stays tight: a site mitre in aluminium opens up as soon as the building moves or someone catches it with a trolley.

83 degrees or 90 degrees?

Match the step. 90 degrees is for a square step, where the two open edges meet at a true right angle. 83 degrees is for a rake back step, where the edge is slightly splayed rather than square. If you are unsure, hold a square into the corner on site: a rake back will show a visible gap at the back of the blade.

What size are the legs?

360mm on each leg, so you have a generous amount of corner to work with and the joint sits well away from the visible corner point. Cut the legs back if your layout needs shorter returns.

Which gauge do I order?

The same gauge as the straight trim it is joining, so the rebate lines through and the floorcovering finishes flush all the way round. Mixing gauges at a corner leaves a step in the covering that is very obvious.

How is it priced?

Per angle, not per metre. One corner piece is one unit. Count the corners on your layout and order that many, then order the straight runs separately by the metre.

How is it fixed?

Exactly as the straight trim: screwed down through the horizontal leg, countersunk, at roughly 300mm centres and close to the corner itself. Fit the corner pieces first and set the straight runs to them, not the other way round, so the corner lands where it should.

Is the weld visible?

The joint is welded and dressed back, so on Mill Finish it is barely noticeable. On Bright Polished it will catch the light slightly at the corner, because a weld never takes a mirror polish quite the same way as the parent metal. If the corner is a focal point and you want it invisible, mill is the safer choice.

Can I get other angles?
