Description

Timber steps, ramps and deck walkways turn treacherous the moment they get wet, mossy or frosty. These 50mm fine grit GRP decking strips give you a permanent, discreet fix that you screw straight onto the existing boards. Each strip is a rigid 3mm glass reinforced plastic (GRP) section with a bonded fine grit surface, so you get dependable grip wet or dry without a coarse finish that is harsh on bare feet, knees or pushchair tyres. They suit pub and hotel managers, holiday parks, schools and landlords as much as homeowners with a slippery garden step.

Why fine grit GRP strips work

Grip that has been tested, not guessed

The range has been pendulum tested to HSE guidance using the 4S slider (slider 96). It recorded a pendulum test value (PTV) of 75 dry and 90 wet. Any PTV of 65 or above is classed as extremely low slip potential, and these readings are well above that line.

A fine surface for barefoot and sensitive areas

Standard grit suits general commercial traffic. Fine grit is the version recommended for schools, hospitals, pool and spa surrounds, and anywhere people walk barefoot or kneel. It still bites in rain and frost, but it feels closer to fine sandpaper than to gravel.

Built for outdoor life

GRP does not rot, rust, corrode, twist or warp. It is UV stable, impact resistant, lightweight and non-metallic. At only 3mm thick, the strip sits almost flush on the board, so it adds grip without creating a new trip edge. Unlike paint or tape, there is nothing to reapply.

  • PTV 75 dry / 90 wet
  • Fine grit, comfortable underfoot
  • Seven colours, including high-visibility Yellow and White
  • Fixing screws included; 3-year guarantee

Where it's used

Pub beer gardens and restaurant terraces, hotel spa and pool decks, holiday lodge verandas, caravan park ramps, school and nursery play areas, care home gardens, footbridges, jetties, boardwalks and railway sleeper steps. At home: patio steps, shed ramps and shaded decking that never dries.

Choosing the right option

Width. At 50mm this is the narrow strip: neat on standard deck boards and lower-risk areas, and easy to run two per step. For wider coverage and stronger visibility on busy routes, choose our 90mm fine grit strip.

Length. For steps, pick the length closest to the width of the step and trim it if needed; 1000mm covers most garden steps and 600mm suits narrow treads. On walkways, fit strips across the boards at regular spacing, using 2000mm or 3000mm on wide terraces, ramps and boardwalks.

Colour. Yellow and White give the strongest step-edge contrast and help people with impaired sight see each step. Black and Dark Grey suit weathered or dark timber, Medium Grey suits grey composite-look boards, and Buff and Brown blend with natural and stained decking. Pick the colour that contrasts most with your timber where safety matters most.

Grit. This listing is the fine grit version. For heavy industrial traffic, choose a standard grit strip.

Installation, use and care

Sweep the boards clean. Fix each strip centrally, with the first and last screw no more than 50mm from each end and no more than 250mm between screws. Screw in sequence with a low torque setting. Strips can be cut with a hacksaw. Cut outdoors or with dust extraction, and wear suitable protective equipment. Clean with a stiff brush, or mild detergent and warm water. Check the fixings and the grit surface regularly; monthly is sensible on busy routes.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The range recorded a pendulum test value of 90 wet and 75 dry. Anything of 65 or above counts as extremely low slip potential. Keep the strips brushed clean of moss and leaf litter so the grit stays exposed.
The strips come with fixing screws and are supplied undrilled, so you can place each screw where it suits your boards. Fix centrally, no more than 50mm from each end and at no more than 250mm centres.
Yes. A hacksaw cuts GRP cleanly. For large quantities, an orbital cutter with a stone or diamond blade is quicker. Cut outdoors or with dust extraction, and wear eye and dust protection.
Fine grit is the version recommended for barefoot and sensitive areas such as pool surrounds, spas and changing areas. It grips when wet but is far kinder underfoot than a coarse quartz grit.
This 50mm fine grit strip comes in seven colours: Black (RAL 9004), White (RAL 9003), Medium Grey (RAL 7004), Dark Grey (RAL 7015), Buff (RAL 1001), Brown (RAL 8028) and Yellow (RAL 1003). For Light Grey or Sage, contact us for a quote.
