Aluminium Stair Nosing 60x55mm Deep Riser Anti Slip Glow Edge

The 55mm riser leg is what sets this profile apart. Most stair nosings cover 30mm or so of the step face; this one drops 55mm, which covers and protects the whole visible riser on a shallow step and gives a much larger block of colour facing anyone coming up the flight. That matters on an accessibility brief, where the step edge has to be obvious from below as well as above. The tread plate is 60mm on a heavy duty 5mm gauge, and a green photoluminescent strip runs along the leading edge, charging from the building's lighting and glowing on its own when that light goes.

Why it works

Seen from below, not just above

A person climbing a stair sees risers, not treads. A 55mm leg presents a deep, continuous band of the insert colour to that view, so the flight reads as a series of clearly marked edges rather than a blur. The manufacturer lists this profile as DDA Compliant, and the supplier describes it as Equality Act 2010 compatible — both are their statements, carried here as published. Whether an installation satisfies those requirements still depends on the contrast achieved against your own floor and riser finishes.

The glow strip is chemistry, not electronics

The manufacturer identifies the photoluminescent element as europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at a peak wavelength of 520nm, with afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation and a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes. It recharges whenever the stair is lit and cannot fail in a power cut. For the insert, the manufacturer states a DIN 51130:2010 classification of R11 at 22.9° corrected and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet — both well clear of the 36 PTV mark the UK Slip Resistance Group associates with low slip potential. The carrier is 6063 aluminium to BS EN 573-3:2003.

Where it is used

Public buildings with an accessibility specification: schools, colleges, libraries, health centres, civic buildings and transport premises, plus communal stairs in managed and sheltered housing. It also suits any refurbishment where the existing riser face is chipped or patched and a deeper cover tidies it up.

Choosing the right option

Length first: 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock extrusion lengths; 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same profile for shorter flights. Measure the full tread width, order the next length up and cut back on site.

Colour is the decision that carries the accessibility argument. Contrast is expressed as a difference in Light Reflectance Value between the step edge and the surfaces around it, and the manufacturer publishes an LRV for every insert — all eleven are in the table above. Against a dark floor, White at 79.9 or Yellow at 55.7 give the widest separation; against a pale floor, Black at 4.5 or Brown at 9.1 do the same in reverse. With a 55mm leg you should check the figure against the riser finish as well as the tread.

Installation, use and care

Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it onto the step, then screw down and fit the insert or insert pip over the screw heads. Check the deep leg sits flat to the riser before fixing — on an uneven or patched riser face you may need to make good first.

Clean the insert with a neutral detergent and rinse with clean water, drying before traffic returns. The aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Do not use solvent cleaners on either part.

Frequently asked questions

Does this take an LED strip?

No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that charges from ambient light and re-emits it in the dark.

Is it DDA compliant?

The manufacturer's datasheet lists this profile as DDA Compliant and the supplier describes it as Equality Act 2010 compatible. We carry those statements as published. Whether a finished installation meets the requirement also depends on the contrast you achieve against your own floor, which is why the LRV figures are in the table.

Why such a deep riser leg?

So the step edge is visible to someone climbing. A 55mm leg presents a deep band of colour to the upward view and covers the whole riser face on a shallow step.

Will it fit a sloping riser?

Not flush. This is a straight-edge profile with a vertical leg, and a 55mm leg exaggerates any mismatch. On a raked riser, use a raked-back profile.

Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming.
