What is a GRP Anti-Slip Stair Nosing?

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) stair nosing is the specification-grade solution for step edge safety in demanding environments. Unlike aluminium profiles with rubber inserts or PVC self-adhesive strips, a GRP nosing is manufactured as a single solid component from fibreglass-reinforced resin with an impregnated quartz grit surface — the grit is locked into the material during production, not applied to the surface afterwards. This impregnation method is significantly more durable than surface-applied alternatives, which can wear, shed grit and lose effectiveness over time.

This 55mm × 55mm L-profile provides equal coverage on both the step tread (horizontal face) and the step riser (vertical face), creating a comprehensive protective nosing that wraps cleanly over the step edge. The high-visibility yellow colour provides the visual contrast required for DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance on public and commercial staircases, making the step edge immediately visible to all users including those with visual impairments.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Impregnated grit — not surface-applied — the quartz grit anti-slip aggregate is incorporated into the GRP during manufacture. It cannot be worn away, washed off or stripped by cleaning equipment. This is fundamentally different from nosings with grit tape applied to the surface, which eventually fail and require replacement.
  • BS7976.2 certified — extremely low slip potential — independently tested to the British Standard for slip resistance. This is the benchmark used by occupational health and safety assessors, architects and facility managers when specifying floor safety products for public and commercial environments.
  • DDA compliant — high-visibility yellow — the yellow colour provides the tonal contrast required by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) for step edge identification on public staircases, schools, hospitals, offices, stations and any facility serving the public.
  • GRP is inherently corrosion-proof — aluminium corrodes when exposed to salt, chemicals or persistent moisture; GRP cannot corrode. This makes it the specification of choice for coastal locations, industrial environments, food processing facilities and water treatment sites.
  • Flame retardant — suitable for fire-risk environments — the material formulation includes flame retardant properties, making it appropriate for care homes, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings where fire safety is regulated.
  • Pressure washable and easy to maintain — the surface resists staining and can be cleaned with pressure washing without damaging the anti-slip surface or compromising performance.

How to Install

  1. Measure and cut to length (if required). GRP can be cut with an angle grinder with a diamond cutting disc, or a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade. Mark the cut line clearly. Wear eye protection and a dust mask — GRP dust is an irritant.
  2. Prepare the substrate. Clean the step edge thoroughly — remove all dust, loose material, oil and existing coatings from the bonding area. For screw-fix: mark pilot hole positions through the GRP. For adhesive-fix: degrease the substrate.
  3. Choose your fixing method:
Screw fix: Drill pilot holes through the GRP and into the step at 200–300mm centres. Use stainless steel countersunk screws for external or wet environments.
Adhesive fix: Apply a suitable structural adhesive (such as a two-part epoxy or polyurethane construction adhesive) to the back of the GRP profile. Press firmly onto the step edge and clamp or support until cured.
  4. Position and fix. Place the nosing on the step edge so the 55mm horizontal face sits flat on the step surface and the 55mm vertical face covers the riser. Drive screws or press the bonded profile into position.
  5. Repeat for each step. Work from the bottom step upwards for the neatest installation sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BS7976.2 certification mean?

BS7976.2 is the British Standard for the measurement of slip resistance using a pendulum friction tester. An "extremely low slip potential" rating means the nosing surface achieves a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 36 or above — the threshold at which HSE guidance considers a surface to present low slip risk in wet and dry conditions. This certification is recognised by insurance assessors, architects and compliance officers as evidence that a product meets UK safety specifications.

Why is the yellow colour required for DDA compliance?

The Disability Discrimination Act (and subsequent Equality Act 2010) requires that features affecting accessibility — including stair edges — provide adequate visual contrast to assist people with visual impairments. High-visibility yellow against concrete, stone or metal provides the tonal contrast (typically 30+ LRV difference) required to make step edges clearly identifiable. This is why yellow GRP nosings are the standard specification for public staircases in the UK.

How does impregnated grit differ from surface-applied grit?

Surface-applied grit is glued or coated onto a base material after manufacture. It wears down with foot traffic, washes away with cleaning and can shed aggregate, leaving bare patches. Impregnated grit is fused into the GRP matrix during the manufacturing process — the grit is part of the material itself, not a coating on top of it. The surface remains consistently anti-slip throughout the product's 10+ year service life without performance degradation.

Can GRP nosings be used on metal steps?

Yes. GRP bonds strongly to clean, degreased metal using structural adhesive. For screw-fix installation on steel, use stainless steel self-tapping screws to avoid galvanic corrosion. GRP is widely used on steel access platforms, industrial walkways, ship steps and dock access.

Are the Pack of 5 lengths cut to size or supplied at full length?

The 3m and 3.6m lengths are supplied in packs of 5 at the stated full length. Each piece is individual — they are not pre-cut. If you require lengths shorter than 3m, select from the individual shorter lengths (400mm through to 2m).

What adhesive should I use for bonding?

A two-part polyurethane construction adhesive provides the most reliable long-term bond for GRP to concrete, stone and metal substrates. Ensure both surfaces are clean and dry before application. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's cure time — typically 24 hours for full strength — before the steps are returned to service.

Can the nosing be cut to a non-standard length on site?

Yes. GRP is straightforward to cut using an angle grinder with a diamond disc (preferred for clean cuts) or a jigsaw with a fine metal-cutting blade. Always wear appropriate respiratory protection and eye protection when cutting — GRP dust is a glass fibre irritant.

Is this suitable for domestic use or is it purely commercial?

The specification is commercial and industrial grade, but there is no reason it cannot be used domestically. Homeowners who want permanent, maintenance-free stair edge protection — particularly on concrete, stone or external steps — benefit from the same 10+ year service life and certified slip resistance as commercial installations.

Had to find something for the community center’s wooden steps that could handle wear and wet, given folks rushing about. This yellow cover really fits right into our space and was a breeze to tack down - securely in place without any faff. Since going on, even with all those feet on it almost daily, its still as solid as it was the first day, with fantastic visibility making sure everyone is safe and sound from slips.

Came promptly and in good nick, albeit not exactly winning any awards for sophistication. Mounted it on the slippery walkway up to the campus library and its managed the British drizzle quite well so far. Was slightly wary that stair nosing might be another overblown product term, but these things hold up like they promised—decent traction now even with footfall during peak lecture rushes. Remarkably, theyre not half bad at staying put either amidst fallen autumn leaves. Overall pretty chuffed with how its playing out compared to my likely misplaced initial cynicism!

Got this for the steps leading into our main lobby and, I must admit, wasnt expecting it to be such a nice visual touch. The stair nosing has a sleek finish that enhances the overall look while promising durability in this bustling environment. A bit grumbly about the installation process being trickier than expected, but all in all, quite chuffed with its stylish appearance and safety features.
