Description
A dovetail insert is designed to be captured, not glued. The tapered section keys into a matching routed groove so the strip is held mechanically as well as adhesively, which is why it stays put on stairs where a flat-backed strip would eventually lift at the ends.
Why the dovetail section
A flat insert relies entirely on the bond. Once water, cleaning chemicals or thermal movement start working at one end, a flat strip peels progressively. A dovetail is trapped by its own geometry: the groove is narrower at the surface than at the base, so the strip cannot lift out even if the adhesive is compromised. On external steps and in wash-down areas, that is the difference between a five-year and a fifteen-year detail.
Two thicknesses
6mm suits a shallower groove and stone or terrazzo where routing depth is limited. 8mm gives more wearing material above the groove and is the choice for heavy traffic or where the tread will be machine-scrubbed.

Choosing the right option
Thickness. 8mm where traffic is heavy or the stair is machine-cleaned; 6mm where routing depth is limited.
Colour. Yellow is the high-visibility choice for industrial and escape routes. Black and grey recede on concrete. White gives strong tonal contrast on dark stone.
Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece, or use the cut-to-size version for anything between 250mm and 2700mm.
Installation, use and care
Rout the groove to match the dovetail section; a parallel-sided groove defeats the point of the profile. The substrate must be clean, dry and free of laitance. Bed in an exterior-grade adhesive, feed the strip in from one end rather than pressing it down flat, and set it back at least 15mm from the front arris. Clean with a stiff brush and water.
