A deep-riser square-edge stair nosing sized for the 55mm contrast rule

If you are pricing a stair in an office, school, clinic, shop or apartment block, the guidance on step edges asks for a contrasting band at least 55mm wide on the tread and at least 55mm down the riser. Most single-channel nosings give you the tread band and leave the riser to the decorator. This one does not: the tread plate is 62mm wide and the front face drops a full 56mm, so both figures are cleared on the nosing alone. It is extruded from aluminium alloy at a 5mm gauge, rated by the manufacturer for medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring, and it sits in the manufacturer's DDA stair nosing range.

What the guidance asks for. Approved Document K, clause 1.7a, for buildings other than dwellings: make step nosings apparent with a material that contrasts visually, a minimum of 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser. Clause 1.10a, for the common access areas of buildings containing flats: 50mm to 65mm on the tread and 30mm to 55mm on the riser. Approved Document M treats visual contrast as adequate where the light reflectance value of the two surfaces differs by more than 30 points.

How this profile measures against it. The tread plate is 62mm and the front face is 56mm, so both clear the 55mm minimum in 1.7a, which is the clause that covers most commercial and public stairs. Under 1.10a the 62mm tread sits inside the 50mm to 65mm band, while the 56mm face is one millimetre over the 30mm to 55mm riser band, so on the common stairs of a block of flats confirm the face depth with Building Control before ordering, or ask us for the 32mm-face version of the same section. The contrast itself is your choice of insert against the floor covering; we publish the manufacturer's LRV for all 19 colours below so you can hold the 30-point difference deliberately. Compliance is a property of the finished installation and is signed off by Building Control or your access consultant, not by the nosing on its own.

Why it works

The 56mm face carries the riser contrast itself

On a shallow-faced nosing the riser contrast comes from a painted band or a change of covering, and it is the first thing lost on the next redecoration. Here the metal face is the band: a continuous 56mm strip the full width of every step that reads from below as a user descends and takes the knocks a shallow nosing leaves to the plaster.

A 5mm gauge that finishes flush with carpet

Gauge is the depth of the rebate behind the insert channel, and it decides which floor covering meets the nosing without a lip. At 5mm this profile is made for medium-weight carpet and heavy-duty smooth flooring, in the manufacturer's words. Lay 2mm vinyl up to it and you will feel the step; the manufacturer's 3.5mm-gauge version of the same section is the one for that job.

Slip performance stated by the manufacturer

The manufacturer's safety documentation pack includes a BS 7976-2 pendulum test by Floor Safe Ltd, report FS10174 of 11 September 2015, Four-S slider, on a sample recorded as a linished stair tread: 70 PTV dry and 58 PTV wet, both in the low slip potential band of the HSE and UK Slip Resistance Group scale (0 to 24 high, 25 to 35 moderate, 36 and above low). We carry those figures as the manufacturer states them, note that the sample is the linished tread rather than explicitly the PVC insert, and have not tested the profile ourselves.

A wear part you replace, a carrier you keep

The PVC insert sits in its own channel; when traffic flattens it, the insert alone is renewed.

Choosing the right option

Start with the step. This profile is cut for a square step nose; on a raked riser it will sit proud with a void behind the face, so use the raked-back version instead. Then confirm the floor build-up: 5mm gauge for carpet and heavy smooth flooring, the 3.5mm version for thin vinyl and lino.

Choose the insert on contrast, not taste. Take the light reflectance value of the floor covering running up to the nosing and pick an insert at least 30 points away: Premium Black at 4.48, Dark Blue at 5.06 or Dark Green at 7.96 against a pale floor; White at 73.69, Oyster at 58.10 or Yellow at 55.35 against a dark one. Hazard, the black and yellow band, is for a step that must be flagged as a hazard in its own right, such as a plant room or a single step in a level corridor.

Finish last. Mill Finish is the standard and the most economical. Bright Polished, Satin Gold and Satin Bronze are specified to match ironmongery and balustrades and are priced from the manufacturer's own list, which is why the finish moves the price more than the insert does. Measure the going and take the next stock length up; all three cut down on site.

Installation, use and care

The manufacturer's installation guide runs in this order: make good any damaged step edge with repair mortar, clean and dry the substrate, offer the nosing up pushed hard against the riser and mark through the pre-drilled holes, drill and plug, run a bead of cartridge adhesive along the underside, screw down and cap each screw head. Cut with a fine-tooth blade and de-burr the ends. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; keep abrasive pads, solvents, bleach and acidic cleaners off the insert and the coloured finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose the 56mm face over the 32mm version of the same section?

Because the 55mm figure in Approved Document K applies to the riser as well as the tread, and this face provides it itself.

Will it fit a raked or bullnosed step?

No. The manufacturer makes a raked-back version of this section and a bullnose profile for rounded steps; ask us and we will quote either.

Is it suitable for external steps?
