Description

Stair treads are rarely a round number, and a GRP nosing cut short on site leaves a raw gritted end that chips and catches. This is the same heavy duty GRP nosing as our 1m, 1.5m, 2m and 2.8m stock lengths, cut here to the exact millimetre you specify between 250mm and 2800mm, tolerance plus or minus 5mm.

What it is

A one-piece glass reinforced polyester angle with an aluminium oxide grit surface moulded in, not bonded on. There is no metal carrier and no separate insert to work loose: the whole nosing is the wearing surface, which is why GRP is the usual specification for external steps, fire escapes and industrial stairs where a two-part aluminium and PVC nosing would eventually rattle or lift.

Two profiles are stocked. The 55mm x 55mm angle gives equal cover to the tread and the riser and is the general-purpose choice. The 70mm x 30mm has a deeper tread face and a shallow nose, for goings where the grip band matters more than riser cover.

Why cut to size

GRP is abrasive to cut and the dust is an irritant; a site cut with the wrong blade leaves a frayed edge that exposes the glass fibre. Workshop cutting gives clean sealed ends that sit tight to the string or wall.

Measuring and fixing

Measure each tread individually and take 3mm to 5mm off a wall-to-wall measurement. The substrate must be sound, clean and dry; on worn concrete make good the arris first or the nosing will bridge a hollow. Pre-drill and countersink, fix at roughly 300mm centres, and bed in a bead of structural adhesive as well as screwing where the stair is external. Custom lengths are made to your figures, so they are non-returnable except for faults.

Ordering and delivery

Cut lengths are made to order; allow additional working days over a stock length. Standard UK mainland delivery is a flat rate. If your treads sit close to 1m, 1.5m, 2m or 2.8m, the stock listing linked above will reach you sooner.
