Description

Notices taped to a door or stapled to a post do not survive a British winter. An outdoor lockable notice board keeps parish minutes, term dates, menus and statutory notices dry, legible and out of the hands of anyone who was not asked to change them. This is the black-framed, felt-backed external poster case: a 45mm anodised aluminium box with a hinged key-locking door, a 2mm polycarbonate front and an internal watertight seal. It takes drawing pins and hook-and-loop tape, not magnets. Eleven sizes run from A4 to B0 and 40 x 60 inch, in grey, blue or red felt.

Why it holds up outdoors

The case body is a 45mm extruded aluminium profile, anodised and finished in black, so it does not rust or need repainting after a few seasons on a north-facing wall. The front is 2mm polycarbonate rather than glass, so it takes a knock from a football or a stone without shattering and leaves no broken glass on a footpath if it is ever forced.

Weather is kept out by a seal around the inner rebate of the back box, which the door compresses when locked. Behind it sits a felt pin panel with 15mm of internal depth, so several layers of paper fit without the cover pressing on your notices. A4, A3 and A2 cases have a single lock; every larger size carries two, so a long door edge cannot be levered. The case hangs portrait or landscape.

Read this as the standard-duty external specification: sealed and lockable, but not the double-sealed, IP-rated construction used on premium outdoor cases, which typically cost two to three times as much.

  • Weatherproof - internal watertight seal, rated for indoor and outdoor use
  • Lockable - one lock up to A2, two locks on every larger size
  • Shatter-resistant - 2mm polycarbonate cover instead of glass
  • Pin and hook-and-loop friendly - felt backboard, 15mm internal depth
  • Eleven sizes - A4 to B0 and 40 x 60 inch, portrait or landscape

Where it is used

Parish and town councils use these cases for statutory and planning notices that must stay posted and undamaged for a fixed period. Schools mount them at the gate for term dates and club information. Churches, village halls and community centres use them for service times and hall bookings. Businesses fit them in yards and staff corridors, and leisure centres use the larger sizes for timetables.

Choosing the right option

Pick the size by the largest sheet you will ever display, not the one you use most often. Sizes are quoted by the graphic they hold: A4 takes 210 x 297mm, A1 takes 594 x 840mm, B1 takes 700 x 1000mm and B0 takes 1000 x 1400mm. Add roughly 90mm to each dimension for the case when you measure your wall. A single A4 suits a door-side notice; a parish or school board carrying four to six A4 sheets wants A1 or B1. The imperial 20 x 30, 30 x 40 and 40 x 60 inch sizes match imperial poster stock only.

All three felt colours cost the same. Grey is the institutional default and hides fading. Blue reads calmer behind white paper. Red carries more urgency for safety or event boards. Full guidance is in the size and fitting guide below.

Installation, use and care

Fix the back box to a flat, solid wall or post through its corner fixings, using plugs and screws matched to your substrate. Level it before tightening and leave clearance on the hinge side so the door opens fully. Wall fixings are not listed as supplied, so specify them separately. Pin notices working outwards from the centre, lock the door and check the seal seats evenly. Clean the polycarbonate with a soft cloth and mild soapy water only; solvents and abrasive pads craze it permanently.

Frequently asked questions

Will magnets work on the backboard? No. This version has a felt pin panel designed for drawing pins, map pins and hook-and-loop tape. If you need a wipeable magnetic surface, choose a magnetic-backed poster case instead.

Can I mount it in landscape? Yes. The case is symmetrical and fixes either way round, so a B1 case holds one 700 x 1000mm portrait sheet or a landscape spread of smaller notices.

Is it sealed enough for a fully exposed wall? It has an internal watertight seal and is rated for outdoor use. On a wall with no overhang and constant driving rain, a double-sealed IP-rated case is safer.

Ordering and delivery

Choose your size and felt colour above; every combination in the range is listed, from A4 in grey to 40 x 60 inch in red. Cases are made in the United Kingdom. Larger sizes are heavy - a B0 weighs 17.3kg and a 40 x 60 inch case 19.7kg - so check access and allow two people to fit it.
