Staff who step outside for a cigarette in the rain end up sheltering in doorways, under loading canopies or against the nearest wall — and the litter follows them there. This outdoor smoking shelter gives them a designated, weatherproof place to stand, with a covered area of 2050mm x 1200mm, a mono-pitch roof and open sides that keep the structure inside the 50 percent open-air requirement of the UK Health Act. It bolts down to existing concrete or tarmac, so no groundworks are involved.

Why it works

The load-bearing frame is fabricated from steel Strongbox section manufactured to BS EN 10219:2006, the standard covering cold-formed welded structural hollow sections. That matters outdoors: a hollow-section frame resists twist far better than a folded-sheet assembly, so the panels stay square in their rebates through years of wind loading rather than working loose.

Every frame carries a galvanised anti-corrosion treatment, with the zinc coating applied to BS EN ISO 1461. Galvanising protects cut ends and welds sacrificially, which is where painted-only steel fails first. On the two coloured options the powder coat is applied to BS 3900 over that galvanising, giving a duplex system — zinc underneath, a hard-wearing colour finish on top — so you are not trading corrosion protection against appearance.

Glazing is 6mm clear UV2 polycarbonate multiwall sheeting to the roof, the rear panel and both sides. The twin-wall structure absorbs impact far better than glass or single-skin acrylic, so a stray football or a knock from a pallet truck will not shatter it, and the UV2 grade resists the yellowing that makes cheaper sheeting look tired. Clear panels also keep the space overlooked, which discourages loitering.

Choosing the right finish

All three finishes are the same structure at the same price, so choose on setting rather than budget. Galvanised is the practical option for industrial yards, depots and contractor compounds: there is no paint film to chip when a bin or pallet catches a post, and any scuff self-protects. Moss Green RAL 6005 suits schools, hospitals and care homes, where a dark green reads as street furniture against planting. Traffic Blue RAL 5017 suits corporate and retail car parks already using blue on bollards or barriers. If the shelter is visible from a public highway or sits in a conservation area, check with your local planning department first — colour is occasionally a condition.

Installation, use and care

Set the shelter out first and confirm the base is level, sound and made up of good concrete or well-compacted tarmac, then drill and fix through the four mounting feet with the supplied ground anchors. Face the open front away from the prevailing wind. Maintenance is a wash-down with warm water and a soft brush on the polycarbonate — never solvent or an abrasive pad — plus an annual check of the anchor bolts.

Frequently asked questions

Does it meet the smoking legislation? Yes. The open front and part-height side panels leave well over half the perimeter open, satisfying the 50 percent open-air test used in the UK. Siting relative to doors and windows remains your responsible person's judgement.

Are seating or cigarette bins included? No. The shelter is supplied as frame and glazing only; benches, perch seats and cigarette bins are separate items.

Does it arrive assembled? The manufacturer does not publish whether it is despatched pre-assembled or flat-packed. Ask us before you book a fitter and we will confirm for your delivery.

Can it be fixed to grass, gravel or paving slabs? Not directly. The mounting feet need a solid slab to bolt into; on soft ground, concrete pads under each foot or a poured base are the usual answer.
