Description

Segregating people from moving vehicles is the cheapest control you can put in a yard, and a bolted run of full-height pedestrian guardrail does the job in a way paint, tape and cones never will. Each bay is 2m wide and 1m high, bolts to the next along the line, and stands roughly 1050mm above finished ground level once the posts are concreted in. That is high enough to stop someone stepping off a walkway into a reversing lane, and rigid enough to survive being leaned on, knocked and jet-washed every winter. It is what councils, transport operators and principal contractors specify when a walkway needs a physical edge, not a painted one.

Why this guardrail works

The strength comes from the frame. Rails and posts are 50 x 30mm rectangular hollow section, welded into a closed rectangle so the bay resists twisting as well as sideways push. Between the rails sits a close-pitched run of solid round infill bar, welded top and bottom, stopping a child or pushchair passing through and stiffening the panel across the 2m span. Every bay is hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:1999 after fabrication, so the zinc covers the weld seams and the inside faces of the hollow sections, not just the outer skin. That is the difference between a barrier that lasts decades outdoors and one that bleeds rust from its joints within two winters. Posts are supplied full length for concreting in, putting the fixing below ground where it cannot be sheared off by a wheel or unbolted by hand.

Where it is used

This is the barrier you see at traffic light junctions and pedestrian crossings, along construction site perimeters, and around school gates where children queue beside a live road. Inside the gate it does the same job in distribution yards, production facilities and car parks, holding a marked walkway clear of forklift and HGV routes. Councils also use it for infrastructure upgrades and semi-permanent works.

Choosing the right option

Start with run length. Bays are 2m nominal, so measure the gap, divide by two, then add a panel if you have to turn a corner or return into a wall. Bar diameter comes next: 12mm M1 infill suits footway demarcation and yard walkways, while 16mm R1 or 20mm N1 is the step up where the railing sits against a busy carriageway or gets climbed. The bar diameter supplied against this code is not published, so confirm the model when you order. Choose staggered infill where a driver needs to see through the run. Rooted posts suit soft ground and new groundworks; specify baseplates when fixing to an existing slab.

Installation, use and care

Set the line out and mark post centres at 2m intervals, then excavate the holes and dry-fit the run before any concrete goes in. Level each bay, bolt it to its neighbour at the posts and check the line before the concrete sets. Let the concrete cure fully before loading the run. The galvanised finish needs no painting: wash it down when dirty, inspect the bolted joints and ground line yearly, and touch in any scratch that reaches bare steel with zinc-rich paint.

How tall is the railing once it is installed?

Can it be fitted to a slope or a curve?
Yes. Radiused and raked panels are made to order for paths that rise, fall or curve, and special lengths are available where a standard 2m bay will not close the gap.

Can I fix it without digging?
Yes. Rooted posts are standard, but the same panels can be supplied with baseplates to bolt onto an existing slab or hardstanding.

Is it supplied powder coated?
No. The standard finish is hot-dip galvanised. Polyester powder coating to BS EN 13483:2005 in a custom colour is a separate option, quoted on request.

The price shown is per single 2m x 1m guardrail bay in the standard hot-dip galvanised finish with rooted posts. Concrete, fixings and baseplates are ordered separately. Panels ship on a pallet by kerbside delivery, so arrange offloading and a flat area to stack them. For powder coating, staggered infill or raked bays, contact us first.
