Description
When the lights fail or a corridor fills with smoke, the people inside a building need to find the way out without thinking. Photoluminescent egress marking tape gives them a continuously visible route: a self-adhesive tape that absorbs energy from ordinary daylight or artificial lighting while the building is in use, then glows in darkness to pick out exits, door surrounds and low-level escape paths. It is a low-cost, no-wiring measure that facilities managers, landlords and safety officers can install in an afternoon with nothing more than a clean surface and a firm hand. Supplied in 10m rolls in widths from 25mm to 100mm, with a classic glow finish plus four coloured versions for colour-coded schemes.
Why it works
The tape is impregnated with photoluminescent powder. Under normal lighting the pigment charges; when light is removed it releases that stored energy as a visible glow. Because the effect is passive, there is no battery, bulb or circuit to fail at the moment it is needed – the tape works during a power cut precisely because it needs no power. Applied at low level along skirting boards and around door frames, it remains visible below the smoke layer, where emergency guidance is most useful to someone crawling toward an exit. The smooth-surface construction wipes clean and takes print-free handling, and the self-adhesive backing bonds to standard interior building surfaces without fixings.
- Charges from natural or artificial light – no wiring or batteries
- Marks exits and access routes visible in darkness or through smoke
- Self-adhesive application to skirting, door surrounds and walkways
- Suitable for domestic and commercial buildings
Where it's used
Stairwells, corridors and final exit doors in offices, HMOs, hotels, schools, care settings, warehouses, plant rooms, theatres and cinemas – anywhere occupants may face darkness in an emergency. Also used in basements, server rooms and windowless storage areas where lighting failure leaves no ambient light at all.

Choosing the right option
For low-level route marking along skirting boards, 25mm or 50mm is the usual choice – wide enough to read in darkness, narrow enough to sit neatly on the board. Use 75mm or 100mm where the tape must be seen from further away, such as across final exit doors, on plant room walls or along warehouse racking legs. The standard glow version is the conventional choice for escape route schemes. The yellow, blue, orange and red versions (25mm and 50mm) carry the same glow function with a daytime colour, letting you colour-code zones or match an existing signage scheme while keeping after-dark visibility.
Installation, use and care
Apply to a clean, dry, dust-free surface at room temperature, pressing firmly along the full length. Position the tape where it will receive normal lighting during occupied hours so the pigment stays charged. Wipe clean with a damp cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners. As with any adhesive tape, allow a short period after application before washing. The tape is a marking product – it is not a substitute for emergency escape lighting where regulations require it.
Frequently asked questions
Does it need light to work? Yes. The pigment stores energy from ambient light and releases it in darkness, so it must be installed where it is normally lit.
How long does the glow last? The manufacturer does not publish a glow-duration figure for this line. Brightness is highest immediately after lights-out and fades gradually.
Can I walk on it? It is routinely applied to walkways, but note it is a smooth tape with no published slip-resistance rating – for trafficked floors needing grip, use an anti-slip photoluminescent product instead.
Does it replace emergency lighting? No. It supplements escape route visibility; statutory emergency lighting requirements still apply.
