Self Adhesive Aluminium Stair Nosing 25mm x 10mm, Oak, Silver or Brass

Laminate and LVT stairs almost always end the same way: the covering is beautifully laid across the tread and then stops dead at the front edge, leaving a raw lip that chips, lifts and shows its core. This trim is the small, cheap fix for that. It is a slim aluminium angle — 25mm across the tread, 10mm down the riser — with a self-adhesive strip on the back. You press it over the finished edge, and it caps the exposed lamination, gives the foot a defined edge to find, and does it without a single screw hole. Three finishes and two lengths, so it can either disappear into an oak floor or read as a deliberate line.

Why it works

It is small on purpose

At 25mm x 10mm this is the lightest-touch profile in the range. It covers the cut edge of the covering and no more, so it does not eat into the going of a shallow tread or stand proud enough to catch a toe. On a domestic flight where a 55mm commercial nosing would look industrial and steal usable depth, this reads as a trim rather than a safety fitting.

Adhesive, not fixings

The back carries a self-adhesive strip, so there is nothing to drill, plug or countersink. That matters on a stair where the tread is a floating laminate board — a mechanical fixing pins the board and stops it moving with humidity, which is exactly what you do not want. It also means a rented or finished property can be trimmed without making holes.

Aluminium under the finish

All three finishes are on the same extruded aluminium angle, so the oak is a printed wood effect on metal rather than a timber moulding. It will not swell, split or wear through at the corner the way a wooden lipping does, and two shallow grooves run the length of the top face to break up the surface.

Where it's used

Domestic staircases finished in laminate or LVT, above all — new flooring on an existing flight, or tidying an edge that was left raw by the original fitter. Also landings and split-level thresholds, loft conversions, flats and rental refurbishments where drilling is unwelcome, and shallow steps in shops and offices where a full commercial nosing would be out of scale.

Choosing the right option

Finish first. Oak is a printed wood effect and suits laminate and LVT in mid-brown oak tones, where the aim is for the trim to disappear. Matt silver is the neutral choice and sits well against grey, white and cool-toned floors, or anywhere the stair already has brushed metal ironmongery. Matt brass is a soft pale gold rather than a bright polished brass, and works with warmer schemes and older properties. Then length. Measure the finished tread width string to string. A 0.9m piece covers one standard domestic step of up to about 880mm with a trim allowance, so for a straight flight of thirteen steps you need thirteen. The 2.7m length yields three domestic steps per piece and works out cheaper per step, so buy it where your tread width allows a clean division. The profile is cut down on site, never joined out.

Installation, use and care

Lay the floor covering first and let any adhesive cure fully. Cut the trim to the tread width with a fine-tooth hacksaw and file the cut end. The bond is only as good as the surface beneath it, so wipe the step edge with methylated spirit and let it dry — dust and residual polish are the usual causes of a lifted end. Dry-fit first, then peel the liner from one end, align the angle to the edge and press down firmly along the whole length, working outward from the middle. Leave it 24 hours before heavy traffic. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid solvents and abrasive pads.

FAQ

Will the self-adhesive hold on a stair edge?
On a clean, dry, smooth surface it will. The two things that defeat it are dust and polish residue, so degrease the edge with methylated spirit first and press the full length down firmly rather than just the ends.

Is the oak finish real wood?
No. All three finishes are applied to the same aluminium angle, so the oak is a wood-effect print on metal. That is why it holds its edge where a timber lipping would wear through.

Which length should I buy?
The 0.9m covers one standard domestic step; the 2.7m yields three and costs less per step. Measure your tread width first and pick whichever divides cleanly with least offcut.

Is a slip resistance rating published?
No. A tested R value or pendulum figure is not published for this line, and nor is a fire classification. Where a specification demands a certified rating, choose a nosing supplied with test data.
