Solid Brass Stair Nosing 67.2mm Bullnose with Infill | Cut to Length

A solid brass nosing has to do two jobs at once: hold a step edge together under years of traffic, and look like it was always meant to be there. This 67.2 mm bullnose profile is formed from solid brass bar and cut to the length you specify, so it arrives as a finished piece. The 40 mm nose returns over the riser, and the 5.0 mm gauge gives it the mass to take a trolley wheel or a heeled shoe without deforming. A recessed channel runs the full length of the profile and carries your choice of infill — a textured anti-slip insert where grip is the priority, or a matching brass strip where appearance is.

Why it works

Solid brass, not a coated substrate. The profile is grade H/H CZ108 brass to BS EN 12164:2016 — brass through the full section, not a plating or anodised coating over a cheaper core. That matters at a step edge: a coating is only as good as the first knock that goes through it, and wear on solid brass shows as burnish rather than a bare patch of something else.

A 5.0 mm gauge that stays flat. At 5.0 mm the section resists the lifting and drumming that thinner trims develop once an adhesive line ages, and it can be screw-fixed and pulled down tight without dishing around the fixing.

A channel that protects the safety detail. The infill sits in a recess rather than proud of the surface, so the wearing face of the insert is shielded by the brass on either side of it. Published slip resistance runs from PTV 65 dry / 56 wet for the smooth textured PVC up to SRV 92 dry / 86 wet for the carborundum Olympic Grip; the full set is tabulated below.

Where it's used

This profile is specified where a stair is on show and still has to work hard: hotel and restaurant stairs, period and listed buildings where aluminium would look wrong, entrance stairs in offices and civic buildings, retail fit-outs, and domestic staircases in refurbishment. It suits both timber and concrete flights, and the cut-to-length service makes it practical on older stairs where no two goings are quite the same width. The Olympic Grip insert is the one to reach for in wet or external areas.

Visual contrast and Building Regulations

Approved Document M and BS 8300-2:2018 both address the visibility of step nosings, with the contrasting band generally taken as 50–65 mm on the tread and 30–55 mm on the riser, and contrast assessed as a difference in light reflectance value between the nosing and the floor finish beside it. Whether a given combination satisfies your project depends on the infill colour, the brass finish and the floor it sits against — a specification decision, not a property of the component on its own. Choosing the right option

Finish. Polished Brass (LRV 71.45) and Satin Brass (59.55) read as light, bright metals. Antique Brass (29.55) and Antique Bronze (9.15) read as dark. Where the nosing itself is carrying the visual contrast against a pale floor, an antique finish gives far more separation.

Infill colour. Choose castellated or smooth textured PVC where you want a specific colour set against the floor finish, Olympic Grip where slip resistance governs, or a matching brass insert where the edge should read as a single piece of metal. Note that the four brass inserts are a decorative choice: they carry a lower wet slip value than the PVC and carborundum inserts, so they are not the option for a wet area.

Drilling. “No Drilling” ships as a plain profile for adhesive fixing or for drilling on site. “Drilled Hidden Fix” arrives with countersunk fixing holes already machined along the channel, so the screw heads finish beneath the infill and nothing is visible on the walking surface.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a sound, dry, level edge. On timber, screw-fix through the drilled channel using brass or stainless fixings rather than plated steel, which can stain the brass at the interface. On concrete, plug and screw or bed on a suitable construction adhesive, and let it cure before the stair is opened to traffic. Do not over-torque — brass is softer than steel and the countersink will deform.

Polished and satin brass are living finishes and will tone down over time unless lacquered. Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral detergent. Keep abrasive pads and ammonia-based or acidic metal polishes away from the antique finishes: they cut straight through the patina and leave bright patches that cannot be blended back in.

Ordering and delivery

This nosing is priced by the metre and cut to order. Enter the length you need in millimetres — anything from 700 mm to 2700 mm — and set the number of lengths to the number of steps you are covering. The price updates as you type. Cut lengths are supplied to a tolerance of ±5 mm, so measure the finished going and allow for a slight shortfall at each end rather than specifying a tight fit.
