Description

You are edging square steps that get wet: entrance steps, external stairs to a fire exit, or an internal flight that takes rain in off the street. This square aluminium stair nosing is made for that job. A 56mm tread plate carries a coarse gritted GRP insert, and a straight 32mm leg drops down the riser to cap the square edge of the step. The 3.5mm gauge sits on a bare concrete or stone step, or over vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet. Seven finishes, three insert colours and three stock lengths, every one priced individually.

Technical drawing of the 56 x 32mm square aluminium stair nosing with gritted exterior grip insert: 56mm tread, 32mm riser, 29mm inside leg, 3.5mm gauge
56 x 32mm square profile: 3.5mm aluminium gauge, 29mm inside leg, gritted grip insert. Dimensions in mm.

Why this nosing works

A grit insert, not a plastic strip

The insert is GRP with fused alumina or quartz grit set into the resin and sealed under a gel coat, so the grip runs through it rather than sitting on top. The manufacturer gives TRL pendulum values of above 95 dry and above 85 wet; anything over 36 is rated low slip potential. That wet margin is why you choose it over PVC on any step that sees rain.

Made for a square step edge

The straight leg, 32mm overall and 29mm inside, meets the tread at a right angle, so the profile sits tight over a square nosing with no hollow underneath to flex and loosen the fixings. It protects the arris from chipping and stops floor coverings fraying at the nose.

Contrast you can put in an access statement

Insert LRVs are published: Coal 5.09, Brimstone 54.24, Everest 58.00. Approved Document M treats a difference of more than 30 points as adequate visual contrast, so one of the three will clear it on almost any tread. The profile is classed as Building Regulations compliant.

Built to stay put outside

The GRP is General Purpose (GP) grade for fire, 193 MPa in flexure and 123 MPa in tension, and will not bow or warp in heat or frost. The aluminium does not rust, and the countersunk screws hide under insert plugs.

Where it is used

External entrance steps to offices, schools, health centres and shops; fire-escape and service stairs; steps to ramps and loading bays; communal entrances; internal flights just inside a door. Concrete, stone or timber steps with a square front edge. For dry internal stairs the same 56 x 32mm profile comes with a textured High Grip insert or PVC inserts in 15 colours.

Choosing the right option

Check the step edge first. This profile is for square-edged steps. Rounded noses need a bullnose profile; for a deeper leg that covers more of the riser, the 56 x 56mm square profile takes the same inserts.

Insert colour is a safety decision. Pick the colour that contrasts with the tread: Coal on pale concrete and stone, Brimstone for high visibility on dark and mid-tone steps, Everest where yellow is too loud on a dark floor.

Then the length. Measure the widest step and take the next stock length up; bars cut on site with a fine-tooth non-ferrous blade.

Finish last. Mill Finish is the usual choice outside. Satin Black and the bronzes recede into dark schemes; Satin Gold and the Mirrorflect finishes are for entrances where the metal is meant to be seen.

Installation, use and care

Make good damaged edges, then clean and dry the step. Push each nosing hard against the step and mark through the drill holes; on concrete or stone, drill and plug, using corrosion-resistant fixings outside. Apply cartridge adhesive to the underside, screw down firmly and press the insert plugs over the screw heads. Sweep leaf litter and moss out of the grit regularly and wash with water and a neutral detergent; avoid solvents on coloured finishes.

Fixings and adhesive are not included. Tell us the substrate and we will quote suitable fixings.

Frequently asked questions

Can this stair nosing be used outside?

Yes. The grit insert is the exterior grade and the aluminium does not rust. The manufacturer gives TRL pendulum values above 95 dry and above 85 wet, where 36 or more already counts as low slip potential.

Is this nosing Building Regs compliant?

The profile is classed as Building Regulations compliant, and the published insert LRVs let you show step-edge contrast in an access statement. Ask us if Building Control needs a copy of the certificate.

Will it fit over carpet?

The 3.5mm gauge suits vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet, or a bare concrete or stone step. Thick or heavy-pile carpet would stand proud of the plate; ask us for a heavier-gauge profile.

How many steps will one length cover?

Allow a few millimetres per saw cut. A 2.44m bar gives two 1.2m steps, a 2.75m bar two 1.35m steps, and a 3.22m bar three 1.05m steps or two 1.6m steps.

Put it in about half a year ago at the local library, and I’m happy to say its held up brilliantly. The grip is just as strong as day one, even with plenty of people tramping over it daily, and autumn leaves do nothing to diminish its effectiveness. Im genuinely surprised by how well its resisted the elements and kept everyone on sure footing!

Picked these to enhance the entrance steps at our shopping centre, and theyve truly upped the game. The stair nosing blends seamlessly with the concrete, giving a neat finish that feels secure underfoot. Considering theyre exposed to all weather types, the sturdy grip is still holding its own magnificently; glad I chose this for such a high-traffic area.
