Description
When a car park needs bays laid out before Monday trading, or a worn give-way line needs replacing without closing the road for a day, preformed thermoplastic line marking is the tool for the job. These pre-beaded thermoplastic rolls and strips give you the same durable, high-visibility marking used on public highways, applied with nothing more than a gas torch and basic hand tools. You position the line, heat it until it melts into the surface, and open the area to traffic once cooled. There is no marking machine to hire, no wet paint to cordon off and no specialist crew required, which makes this format a practical choice for facilities teams, groundworkers, car park operators and contractors handling small to medium marking jobs.
Why it works
Thermoplastic marking outlasts paint because it does not sit on the surface – it fuses into it. When torched, the material melts and bonds with the asphalt beneath, forming a thick, wear-resistant line that withstands trafficking far better than a painted equivalent. Each roll is supplied pre-beaded: reflective glass beads are already incorporated into the material, so the finished line returns light from headlamps at night without a separate beading pass.
The preformed format also removes the biggest source of error in thermoplastic work – screed consistency. Because the line arrives at a factory-controlled width and gauge, a careful first-time user can produce straight, uniform markings that look professionally applied.
- Fuses into asphalt for a permanent bond rather than a surface coating
- Pre-beaded for night-time retroreflectivity from day one
- Applied with a standard gas torch – no marking machinery
- Factory-formed width and thickness for a consistent finish
Where it's used
Roads, car parks, footpaths, cycle paths, hard sports surfaces and playgrounds. Typical jobs include parking bay lines, hatching, give-way and stop lines, walkway edges in yards, and colour demarcation at schools and leisure sites. The black option is widely used to mask redundant markings without scraping.

Choosing the right option
Match the width to the job: 50mm suits car park bay lines and games markings; 75mm and 100mm cover most estate roadway lines; 150mm and 200mm are for junction markings, hatching and anywhere a line must read clearly at speed. Choose 5m rolls for continuous runs and 1m strips for patch repairs, short bays and symbol work. White and yellow are the standard traffic colours and are stocked in the full width range in both lengths. Red suits cycle lanes and warning zones, black is the masking colour, and primrose and deep cream (5m rolls, 50–100mm only) match older or heritage marking schemes. Note that black is not offered in 75mm, and 1m strips are not offered in primrose or deep cream.
Installation, use and care
Apply only to a completely dry surface. On asphalt or tarmac no preparation is normally needed beyond sweeping; on concrete, apply a thermoplastic surface primer first. Old painted lines must be scraped away – thermoplastic cannot be applied over paint. Lay the line in position, then heat with a gas torch until the material visibly melts and bonds. In cold weather, warm the roll gently before unrolling to avoid snapping the material. Once cooled, the marking needs no ongoing maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special machine to lay it? No. A propane gas torch and a stiff broom for surface prep are sufficient for this preformed format.
Can I apply it to concrete? Yes, but only after treating the area with a suitable thermoplastic surface primer. Direct application to bare concrete is not recommended.
Will it go over my existing painted lines? No. Remove old paint completely first; thermoplastic will not bond reliably to painted surfaces.
Is it reflective at night? Yes. The material is supplied pre-beaded with glass beads that return headlamp light.
