Description

A digger bucket striking a live cable or a pressurised main is one of the most dangerous and costly accidents on a groundworks site, and underground warning tape is the simple, permanent safeguard that prevents it. Laid in the trench above a buried service before backfilling, it gives any future excavator a clear, unmissable warning long before their tools reach the pipe or cable below.

Each roll is a non-adhesive, flexible plastic tape manufactured to resist degradation from soil acids, alkalis and moisture for decades once buried. It is printed with bold, repeating black warning text along its full length so the message is visible whichever section is uncovered first. The colour and wording are matched to the utility being marked, following the widely used UK convention of yellow for electric and gas services, blue for water, and green for telecoms and communications cabling.

Why it works

  • Durable buried-service tape – resists soil chemicals and moisture for long-term underground use
  • Bold repeating print – the warning is visible from whichever point the tape is uncovered
  • Colour-coded by service – yellow, blue and green follow common UK utility marking convention
  • Non-adhesive design – lays flat in the trench without needing to bond to soil or pipework
  • Full-length roll – covers long cable and pipe runs without frequent joins

Where it's used

This tape is laid by groundworks contractors, utility installers, landscapers and civil engineering teams above newly laid electric cables, gas pipes, water mains and telecoms ducting, at a shallow depth above the service and below the finished ground level. It gives any future excavation team, from a JCB operator to someone digging a fence post hole, a clear warning before they reach the buried service itself.

Choosing the right service tape: match the tape to the utility being marked: yellow "Electric Cable Below" for power cables, yellow "Gas Main Below" for gas pipework, blue "Water Main Below" for water supply pipes, and green "Telephone Cable Below" for telecoms and communications cabling. Using the correct colour and wording helps anyone working near the trench in future identify the buried service at a glance, even before they reach it.

Installation, use and care

Lay the service first at the correct depth for the utility type, then backfill part way before laying the tape flat across the full width of the trench, typically 150 to 300mm above the service and at least 150mm below finished ground level. Continue backfilling normally once the tape is in place. No fixing or adhesive is required; the tape simply needs to remain buried directly above the service line it is marking.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should the tape be buried?
As a general guide, lay it roughly 150 to 300mm above the service and at least 150mm below finished ground level; always follow the specific utility's installation guidance for the service being marked.

Does the tape need adhesive to stay in place?
No, it is a non-adhesive tape that stays in position once backfilled over.

Can I join two rolls together on a long run?
Yes, simply overlap the ends by a short distance before backfilling to maintain a continuous visible warning along the full run.
