Aluminium stair nosing is a metal edging profile fixed along the front edge of a step. It does three jobs at once: it absorbs the impact and abrasion that would otherwise destroy the step edge, it puts a slip-resistant surface exactly where the foot lands, and it marks the edge clearly enough that people can judge the step without looking twice.
That combination is why aluminium is the default on UK commercial stairs. It is light enough to cut and fit on site, stiff enough to take trolley and barrow traffic, and it does not rust.
What the profile actually does
Edge protection. The front 40mm of a step takes the most concentrated wear on a staircase. Left unprotected, timber splinters, concrete spalls and tile chips — and once an edge starts breaking up it becomes the trip hazard the stair was designed to avoid. The profile takes that load instead of the substrate.
Slip resistance. Most profiles carry a PVC, rubber or silicon-carbide insert set into one or two channels. The insert does the gripping, not the metal. Inserts are replaceable; the extrusion generally is not the part that wears out.
Visual definition. A nosing in a contrasting colour shows where each step ends. That matters most on descent, in poor light, and for anyone with reduced vision — which is why contrast, not just grip, is written into UK accessibility guidance.

Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer as soon as it meets air, which is why it survives outdoors, poolside and in wash-down areas where mild steel would rust. Brass looks better in heritage and hotel work but needs regular polishing to stay that way. Rubber and PVC are cheap and quiet underfoot but degrade under UV. GRP grips better than anything else and shrugs off chemicals, which is why it dominates industrial and marine stairs — but it cannot be finished to match an interior scheme.
For most specifications aluminium is the balance point between the four, which is why it makes up the bulk of the aluminium stair nosing range.
Choosing a profile shape
Shape is determined by what the stair is made of and how much of the riser you need to protect.
- Square or straight edge — the standard commercial profile. A full vertical face protects the riser as well as the tread. See the heavy duty straight single channel profile.
- Rakeback — the vertical face angles back under the tread, so it suits stairs with an existing raked riser and reads as less bulky from below. See the rakeback equivalent.
- Bullnose — a rounded leading edge that softens a sharp corner. Common in refurbishment, care homes and hotels, both for appearance and to reduce injury in a fall. See the semi-rounded bullnose profile.
- Tile-in — a thin leg beds into the tile adhesive so the nosing finishes flush with a tiled tread. Specify by tile thickness, as with the 34 × 11mm tile-in profile for 10mm tiles.
- Push-in — clips into the machined lip of a laminate or engineered board, as on the 2.7m push-in laminate nose. Mostly domestic.
- Illuminated — carries an LED strip along the front face. Escape routes, cinemas and stepped seating, where the edge has to read in the dark.
Sizing
Width — the part sitting on the tread — is the main decision:
- 20–36mm — slim profiles for LVT, thin tile and domestic stairs where bulk matters
- 30–40mm — general residential
- 50–70mm — commercial and high traffic
- 55mm — the figure to work to where Approved Document M applies, on both tread and riser
Riser face depth runs from around 10mm for minimal projection to 55mm and above for full riser protection. Gauge runs from 1.5mm for light domestic duty through 2.5–3mm for general commercial work to 5mm for industrial stairs. Stock lengths are typically 2.4m to 3.22m and are cut down on site.
On external steps allow a 10–15mm overhang so the profile acts as a drip edge and water is thrown clear of the riser. And measure every step individually — in older buildings widths vary by several millimetres from top to bottom of a flight.
Finishes
- Mill — raw aluminium. Cheapest, shows fingerprints and scuffs, best kept to protected interior locations.
- Anodised — a hard oxide coating with good corrosion resistance that cleans easily. Silver, gold, bronze, black and champagne are all standard, as on the 1200mm screw-fix anodised profile.
- Powder coated — the widest colour range and the best chip resistance, at the highest cost. Also the practical route to a specific LRV where contrast is being specified rather than eyeballed.
Brushed finishes hide minor scratches better than polished ones, and matt reduces glare under bright stairwell lighting. Outdoors, specify anodised or powder coated — mill finish will chalk.
Fixing methods
Screw fixing is the default for concrete, timber and any high-traffic stair. Pre-drill the profile so it does not distort, and match the fixing to the substrate: masonry anchors into concrete, wood screws into timber, resin anchors into natural stone. Keep fixings out of the centre wear line, where they work loose fastest.
Adhesive fixing is for situations where visible fixings are unacceptable. It needs a clean, dry, sound substrate and a stable temperature while it cures, which makes it an indoor method in practice. Self-adhesive profiles are suitable for smooth, sound surfaces only — not for a stair that already has a failing edge.
Push-in and clip systems conceal the fixings and let the visible profile or insert be lifted out for replacement without disturbing the stair.
Retrofit is normal rather than exceptional: aluminium nosing fits existing concrete, timber and stone stairs provided the substrate is sound enough to hold a fixing. Cut with a hacksaw, mitre saw or angle grinder with a metal cutting disc, then file the cut edge smooth and touch up any exposed cut on a coated profile. What the UK regulations actually say
These get quoted loosely, and the distinction between a requirement and a recommendation matters when you are specifying:
- Approved Document K covers stair geometry — going, rise and nosing projection.
- Approved Document M covers access, and is the source of the 55mm × 55mm contrasting band across the tread and riser. It applies to buildings other than dwellings.
- BS 8300-2:2018 is a British Standard, not law. It recommends at least 30 points of LRV difference between the nosing and the surrounding tread.
- The Equality Act 2010 creates a duty to make reasonable adjustments. It does not itself specify stair nosings.
- DIN 51130 is the R9 to R13 slip rating scale quoted on inserts and treads.
Read together: Part M sets the size and contrast of the visible band on non-domestic stairs, BS 8300 gives you a number for how much contrast, and the R rating tells you how much grip the insert delivers. Profiles such as the 67 × 55mm DDA profile are dimensioned with that Part M band in mind. What applies to your project depends on whether it is new build, a material alteration or an existing stair, so confirm the scope before specifying.
Service life and maintenance
Clean to suit the traffic — weekly in a busy public stairwell, monthly in a domestic or low-traffic setting. Mild detergent and water is enough. Avoid abrasive cleaners on anodised and powder-coated finishes, and keep polish and wax off the inserts entirely, which is the fastest way to undo the slip resistance you specified.
Check fixings at least annually, more often in heavy traffic. Loose screws create a trip point and let water track behind the profile.
Replace inserts once the grip pattern has worn smooth rather than waiting for the extrusion to fail. On most systems the insert changes out without removing the profile.
How long it lasts
The honest answer depends on which part you mean, and this is where most published figures mislead by quoting a single number for a two-part product.
The anodised extrusion is effectively a permanent fitting. The oxide layer is hard and self-healing, and twenty years or more is normal in commercial service. The insert is the wear component, and typically needs replacing every ten to fifteen years in steady traffic — sooner on a heavy public stair, considerably later in a domestic hallway. That is the design working as intended: you renew a strip of PVC rather than refitting the staircase.
Unlike our GRP range, aluminium nosings are not sold against a fixed guarantee period, because service life turns far more on the insert and the environment than on the metal itself.
Frequently asked questions
What width of stair nosing do I need?
Between 25mm and 75mm covers most of the market, with 50mm the common commercial choice. For domestic stairs 30–40mm is usually enough. Where Approved Document M applies, work to a 55mm contrasting band on both the tread and the riser.
How long does aluminium stair nosing last?
Two answers, because it is a two-part product. The anodised extrusion commonly lasts twenty years or more in commercial use. The insert wears and is normally replaced every ten to fifteen years, without removing the profile. Treat any single-figure lifespan claim with caution.
Can nosing be fitted to existing stairs?
Yes. Aluminium profiles retrofit to concrete, timber and stone as long as the substrate is sound and will hold a fixing. Choose the profile depth to suit the covering already on the stair.
Can it go over carpet, vinyl or tile?
Yes, with the right profile. Carpet needs a profile that grips and retains the carpet edge, tile needs a tile-in profile matched to the tile thickness, and LVT or laminate usually takes a push-in or slim surface-mounted profile. Both depth and fixing method change with the covering.
Can aluminium nosing be cut to length?
