Tile-in step edging for 10mm tiled treads

A tiled step edge is the most vulnerable detail on a staircase. Cut edges chip, the adhesive bed cracks along the nose, and once the arris has gone there is no repair short of lifting the tread. This profile deals with that at the point of installation: an anodised aluminium tile-in nosing bedded into the adhesive while you tile, so a rounded aluminium nose takes the traffic instead of the tile edge. It is sized for 10mm ceramic, porcelain and natural stone, in five anodised finishes, so the edge can disappear into the tile or read as a deliberate line. Stocked in 1.0m and 2.5m, and cut on site with a hacksaw.

Why it works

The nose carries the load, not the tile

The 11mm bullnose wraps the front arris of the tread and stands slightly proud of the riser, so dropped objects and scuffed toe caps meet extruded aluminium rather than a glazed edge. Being a closed hollow section rather than a folded sheet, it holds its shape under point loads that would dent a thinner pressed trim.

The anchor leg is buried, not screwed

Behind the nose sits a flat leg punched with elongated slots, which lies in the adhesive bed beneath the tread tile. Adhesive keys through the slots and locks the profile as it cures. Nothing passes through the visible face, so there are no screw heads to work loose or corrode.

Ribbing where the foot lands

The top of the nose is finely ribbed along its length, breaking up a smooth glazed surface where a descending foot makes contact. Treat it as useful texture, not a rated anti-slip system: no slip-resistance figure is published for this profile and it carries no contrasting insert. The colour is anodised into the aluminium rather than coated on top, so it will not flake at the nose.

Where it is used

Domestic tiled staircases and split-level thresholds. Hallway, porch and utility steps. Hotel, restaurant and retail steps where the look of the edge matters as much as the protection. It also suits the front edge of a tiled hearth, plinth or shower step. Covered external steps are within range; fully exposed steps want a purpose-made external nosing.

Choosing the right option

Length. A 1.0m piece covers a standard domestic stair width of 750-900mm with spare to square both cut ends. Order 2.5m for wide or commercial flights. Buy one piece per tread and cut to width: the profile does not join neatly end to end, so a joint on one step will always show.

Finish. Silver is a neutral satin aluminium for light greys, whites and creams. Gold is a warm yellow tone for beige, terracotta and traditional schemes. Champagne is a muted warm bronze, noticeably darker and browner than Gold. Inox is a mid grey-taupe with a brushed steel character. Black is a deep matt tone for anthracite tiles. To make the edge read as a line, contrast it with the tile; to let it recede, match the grout rather than the tile.

Installation, use and care

This is a tile-in profile and must go in before the tread tile does; it cannot be retrofitted. Cut to the tread width and file the ends smooth. Comb adhesive over the tread, set the anchor leg into the bed at the front edge, then lay the tile up to the profile so the ribbed nose finishes flush with the tile face. Grout to the profile edges and clean off before the grout hazes. Clean with warm water and a neutral pH detergent; abrasive creams and acidic tile cleaners will dull anodising.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit this to a staircase that is already tiled?
No. The anchor leg sits in the adhesive bed under the tile, so it goes in during tiling. A finished staircase needs a surface-mounted nosing instead.

Will it work with 12mm or 8mm tiles?
The channel is 10mm. An 8mm tile sits low and leaves a lip at the nose; a 12mm tile will not seat. Match the profile to the tile rather than making up the difference in adhesive.

Are screws and plugs included?
No, and none are needed. The slotted leg is keyed by the adhesive bed. Do not screw through the visible face.

Is this suitable where slip resistance has to be specified?
Not on its own. The ribbed top adds texture, but no tested figure is published and there is no contrasting insert. Where a specification calls for a tested value or visual contrast, choose a rated anti-slip nosing.
