What is a Tile-In Aluminium Step Edging Profile?
A tile-in aluminium step edging profile is an anodised aluminium trim installed during the tiling process, embedded at the front nose of each stair tread. Designed specifically for 10mm ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles, this profile allows tiles to be fitted flush on both the tread surface and riser, with the aluminium face strip sitting neatly at the stair nose. The result is a professional, seamless finish that protects the vulnerable step edge from chipping and wear while adding a clean visual definition to each step.
With dimensions of 34mm (tread depth) × 11mm (face height) × 10mm (tile channel depth), this is a slim, low-profile edging that keeps the focus on the tiles while providing long-term edge protection.

Key Features and Benefits
- Tile-in design — tiles sit flush against the profile on both the tread and riser, creating a seamless, purpose-built appearance rather than a surface-mounted retrofit.
- 10mm tile channel — precisely sized for standard 10mm floor tile depth, ensuring a tight, rattle-free fit without adhesive modifications.
- Slim 11mm face — low-profile anodised aluminium face sits discreetly at the step nose, protecting the edge without dominating the aesthetic.
- Anodised aluminium — scratch-resistant, corrosion-proof, maintenance-free. Retains finish permanently under daily foot traffic.
- 5 finishes — match the edging to tile grout colour, door hardware, or balustrade finish for a coordinated design.
- Cuttable — metal saw or angle grinder. File cut edges smooth.
Where to Use Tile-In Step Edging
- Domestic ceramic or porcelain tiled staircases
- Office buildings and commercial stair installations
- Public buildings requiring clean, durable step edge protection
- Hotels, restaurants, and hospitality staircases
- Retail units and shopping centre stair details
- External covered steps with ceramic tile finish
⚠️ Important: This is a tile-in profile for 10mm tiles. It must be installed during the tiling process — it cannot be retrofitted onto existing tiles. For 12.5mm tiles, see our heavy duty tile-in nosing. For surface-mount applications, see our surface-mount aluminium stair nosing range.
How to Install Tile-In Step Edging
- Prepare the stair tread — ensure substrate is clean, level, and ready for tiling.
- Cut to length — measure the stair width and cut the profile using a metal saw. File edges smooth.
- Position the profile at the stair nose, aligned with the step edge.
- Fix in place — drill pilot holes through the profile into the substrate and screw down with the supplied fixings.
- Apply tile adhesive and lay 10mm tiles up to the profile on both tread and riser, fitting snugly into the tile channel.
- Grout to the profile edges. Match grout colour to the nosing for a seamless finish.
- Allow to cure fully before use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit this to existing tiles?
No. This is a tile-in profile that must be installed before the tiles are laid. If your tiles are already fitted, you need a surface-mount stair nosing instead.
What tile thickness does this fit?
This profile is specifically designed for 10mm ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles. The channel depth is 10mm. For 12.5mm tiles, a different profile with the correct channel depth is required.
Is this the same as a heavy duty tile-in nosing?
No. This is a slim step edging profile (34mm × 11mm) designed for a clean, low-profile appearance. Heavy duty tile-in nosings (56mm × 55mm) are larger profiles engineered for maximum structural protection and high-visibility anti-slip inserts in commercial environments. This profile prioritises aesthetics and discretion.
Can this be cut to a shorter length?
Yes. Both the 1.0m and 2.5m lengths cut with a metal-cutting saw or angle grinder. Always cut from the plain end and file edges smooth before installation.
What is the best colour for light grey tiles?
Silver or Inox work best with light grey tiles. Silver is brighter and more polished; Inox has a brushed stainless steel finish that complements grey tones subtly. For dark charcoal tiles, Black or Inox are the better choices.
Is this suitable for wet rooms or external steps?
Anodised aluminium is corrosion-resistant. This profile is suitable for wet room thresholds and covered external steps. For fully exposed outdoor stairs subject to standing water, ensure appropriate sealant around the profile edges and use stainless fixings.
How many profiles do I need?
One per stair tread. Count the number of steps. Standard domestic stair widths (750–900mm) are covered by the 1.0m length with spare for cutting. Wide commercial stairs may need the 2.5m length.
What is anodised aluminium?
Anodising is an electrochemical process that creates a hard, durable oxide layer on the aluminium surface. The result is scratch-resistant, corrosion-proof, permanently coloured, and maintenance-free — it will not chip, peel, or require repainting.
