When a tiled staircase needs a step edge you can actually see, 26 mm is not enough. This is the wide version: a 52 mm aluminium tile-in profile with a coloured anti-slip insert along the tread nose. It goes in with the tiling — the perforated anchoring leg beds into the adhesive under the stair tile — so the finished step carries no surface fixings and no screw heads. Five insert colours, three lengths, and five heights from 8 mm to 25 mm, covering standard porcelain through to 20 mm outdoor-grade paving used indoors.

Why it works

A 52 mm band is what specifiers ask for

Step-edge visibility is about the width of the contrasting band, not the grip rating. BS 8300-2 and Approved Document M expect roughly 50–65 mm of contrast on the tread, and at 52 mm this profile sits inside that range where a narrow 26 mm nosing does not. That is the difference between a step edge you read from the top of a flight and one you notice on the way down.

The insert is the wearing part

The coloured tread is a co-extruded insert — rigid PVC body, soft ribbed surface — and it snaps out for replacement without disturbing the profile or the tiling around it. On a busy stair that is the whole economic case: a scuffed, faded edge is refreshed for the cost of an insert, on a staircase that would otherwise need the nose tiles lifting.

Tile-in, so nothing sits proud

The trapezoid-perforated anchoring leg is embedded in the tile adhesive beneath the stair tile, keying the profile into the bed. No lip stands above the tile for a heel to catch, nothing unscrews, and there are no fixing holes through the tread to collect dirt. The trade-off: it is for new or re-tiled staircases and cannot be added to a finished flight.

Where it is used

Offices, schools and colleges, healthcare and public buildings, retail and leisure stairs, apartment and hotel common flights — anywhere the step edge must be obvious as well as protected. It also suits domestic stone and porcelain stairs where the wider band looks more deliberate. Internal, dry-shod use only.

Choosing the right option

Height. This is the profile height, and it must match your tile thickness so the insert finishes flush with the tread. Measure the tile itself, not the tile plus adhesive. 10 mm and 12.5 mm cover most porcelain, 15 mm suits thicker stone, and 25 mm is there for 20 mm outdoor-grade porcelain on internal steps — a detail that usually goes bespoke. Where a tile falls between sizes, go up.

Colour. Choose for contrast, not to match — the point of a 52 mm band is that it is seen. Black RAL 9011 against pale porcelain and Light Beige RAL 1019 against dark stone are the strongest pairings; Yellow RAL 1021 is conventional where the stair is a recognised hazard.

Length. Run each step in one piece where you can — a butt joint mid-tread is a wear point and a visible one.

Installation, use and care

Set the profile out before tiling. Comb adhesive over the step nose, press the anchoring leg fully into the bed, bed the stair tile over the leg and bring the insert level with the tile face. Leave a 1.5–2 mm joint between tile edge and profile and grout as normal. Clean with a neutral-pH cleaner — aluminium is softer than stainless, so keep abrasive pads, wire wool and strongly alkaline cleaners off the metal border.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 52 mm version more slip resistant than the 26 mm?

No. Both carry the same R9 insert surface, so the grip is identical. The wider profile buys a broader contrasting band, more insert area to wear through, and the tread dimension specifiers work to. Choose 52 mm for visibility and duty, not for grip.

Does it meet Part M or BS 8300?

Partly, and the distinction matters. The 52 mm tread band sits within the 50–65 mm those documents expect, and a properly contrasting colour can achieve the 30 LRV points they ask for. But there is no contrasting band on the riser, which they also expect, so it does not deliver full compliance on its own. Where accessibility approval is required, specify a two-part tread-and-riser nosing.

Aluminium or stainless steel?

Aluminium is the cost-effective choice and fine for offices, schools and domestic stairs. On a stair taking trolleys, cages or barrow traffic, the harder stainless equivalent resists edge denting better and is worth the difference. Ask us about stainless in this width.

Can I fit this to a staircase that is already tiled?

No — the anchoring leg sits in the adhesive bed, so it goes in with the tiling. For a finished flight, use a retro-fit nosing that bonds to the face of the existing step.

Is R9 enough for an entrance or a wet area?

No. R9 is the lowest band of the DIN 51130 ramp test and describes a dry internal floor. For entrances, wet rooms or external steps specify R10 or above, and ask for a pendulum test value — UK slip assessment under HSE and UKSRG guidance uses PTV, not R-ratings.
