Aluminium Landing Edge Angle Trim, Per Metre

Aluminium angle trim for the open edge of a landing, gallery or mezzanine floor, sold by the linear metre. It caps the edge where the floor stops and drops away to the stairwell, giving a clean straight metal line and a rebate behind it that takes the floorcovering flush with the top of the trim.

The upstand face is 32mm with a 3.2mm wall. Choose the gauge to suit your floorcovering, in Mill Finish or Bright Polished.

Which gauge do I need?

The gauge is the depth of the rebate behind the upstand, and it has to match the thickness of the floorcovering going into it. Get it right and the covering finishes dead flush with the top of the trim. Too shallow and the covering stands proud of the metal and wears at the edge; too deep and you are left with a lip that catches a toe and a vacuum head.

Measure the covering itself, not the underlay, and if you are between sizes take the deeper gauge and pack up rather than the shallower one.

Why an open edge needs a trim

On an open landing edge the floorcovering has nothing to tuck under. Left bare, a carpet edge frays and lifts, vinyl curls, and the substrate arris chips where feet and trolleys catch it. The angle trim solves all three: the covering is dressed into the rebate so its cut edge is hidden, and the aluminium takes the wear instead of the floor finish.

Fitting

1. Set out against a chalk line: a wave in the metal is very visible along a long open edge.
2. Screw down through the horizontal leg at roughly 300mm centres, closer at the ends, countersunk so the heads sit below the covering.
3. On timber, screw straight in. On concrete or screed, drill and plug.
4. Fit the trim before the floorcovering, then dress the covering into the rebate so it finishes level with the top of the upstand.
5. Where the edge turns a corner, use a fabricated welded corner piece rather than site-cut mitres.

What is this trim for?

It caps the open edge of a landing or gallery floor: the side where the floor simply stops and drops away to the stairwell, rather than meeting a wall or a skirting. The upstand gives that edge a clean straight line and a hard-wearing metal arris, and the rebate behind it lets the floorcovering finish flush instead of being left raw. Without it, a carpet or vinyl edge on an open landing frays and lifts within months.

How much do I order?

Measure the total run of open edge and order that many metres, with a little spare for cutting. It is supplied in 3 metre stock lengths, so if your run is longer than 3 metres you will have a join; plan where it falls, and keep joins away from the most visible corner.

How is it fixed?

Screwed down through the horizontal leg into the substrate, at roughly 300mm centres and closer at the ends, before the floorcovering goes in. Countersink so the heads sit below the covering. On a timber deck use screws straight in; on concrete or screed, drill and plug. Set it out against a chalk line: any wave in the metal reads badly on a long open edge.

Does the floorcovering go over it or into it?

Into it. The covering is taken up to and onto the horizontal ledge, inside the rebate, so its cut edge is hidden behind the upstand and its surface finishes level with the top of the metal. The covering should never be wrapped over the top of the trim.

Can it be used on a stair nosing edge?

No, it is a different job. This trim finishes a horizontal open edge on a landing. The front edge of a step needs a stair nosing, which has a tread face, a riser face and a slip-resistant insert. We list those separately.

What about the corners?

A run of open edge that turns a corner needs a fabricated corner piece rather than two mitres cut on site: the joint is welded and dressed so it stays tight. We list those in the same gauges and finishes, at 90 degrees for a square step and 83 degrees for a rake back.

Mill Finish or Bright Polished?

Mill Finish is the natural matt brushed aluminium and is the normal contract specification: it hides scuffs and fits most schemes. Bright Polished is a mirror finish, used where the trim is meant to be seen as a detail. On a busy public landing the polished finish will show every scratch, so most specifiers use mill.
