Description

This slim aluminium ramp trim finishes the back edge of a heavy duty stair nosing when the stair is covered in a smooth floor rather than carpet. Heavy duty nosings have a 5mm gauge to suit medium-weight carpet. When vinyl, lino or safety flooring is laid behind them instead, the thinner covering sits below the back of the nosing and leaves a small step that catches heels and cleaning machines.

The 26mm-wide trim fits into that gap. Its full-height edge sits against the back of the nosing and its top face slopes down to meet the smooth floor, giving a neat, continuous transition across the whole tread. It is sold per linear metre in the same nine finishes as our heavy duty nosings.

Why it works

A true ramp, not a flat packer

The profile is a shallow wedge: full height along one edge, falling evenly to a thin feathered edge on the other. That slope is what removes the trip edge. A flat spacer only moves the step further back, while a ramp gets rid of it. Because the slope is spread over 26mm, it stays barely noticeable underfoot and doesn't become a new hazard.

A lipped edge that locates against the nosing

The high edge has a small upstand lip and groove, so the trim sits tight against the back of the nosing in a straight, parallel line. The underside is serrated along its length to give adhesive something to key into.

Finishes that match the nosing

It is offered in the same nine finishes as our heavy duty nosings, from economical mill aluminium to satin, bronze, black and mirror-bright Mirrorflect. Nosing and trim can read as one piece, or you can pick a contrasting finish on purpose.

  • 26mm wide aluminium ramp profile
  • For use behind heavy duty (5mm gauge) stair nosings
  • Ramps down to vinyl, lino and other smooth floorcoverings
  • 9 finishes, priced per linear metre

Where it's used

Commercial and public stairs where heavy duty nosings are fitted but the treads are finished in sheet vinyl, safety flooring or lino: school and hospital stairs, office stairwells, shopping centre and leisure stairs, and common parts of apartment blocks. It is also useful on refurbishment jobs where heavy duty nosings stay in place but carpet is replaced with a smooth floor.

Choosing the right option

Match or contrast. Most installers match the trim to the nosing so the back edge disappears into the profile: choose the same finish as your heavy duty nosing. Mill Finish is plain, untreated aluminium and the most economical option for back-of-house and service stairs. Satin Silver, Satin Gold, Satin Bronze, Dark Bronze and Satin Black are low-sheen coloured finishes. Bright Polished and the two Mirrorflect finishes are the most reflective and suit feature stairs.

Do you need it at all? Only if the nosing is a 5mm gauge heavy duty profile and the floor behind it is a thin smooth covering. With carpet the 5mm gauge already matches, and 3.5mm gauge nosings are sized for smooth floors without a ramp.

Quantity. Set the quantity to the total metres you need across all the steps, plus a small allowance for cutting.

Installation, use & care

Fit the nosings first. Cut the trim to each step width with a fine-toothed saw for aluminium and de-burr the ends. With the step clean, dry and sound, bed the trim on a suitable flooring or stair-nosing adhesive with its lipped edge tight against the back of the nosing, then lay the smooth floorcovering up to its feathered edge. Clean with a damp mop and neutral detergent. Avoid abrasive pads on polished, coloured and Mirrorflect finishes.

Frequently asked questions

What does this ramp trim do?

Heavy duty nosings have a 5mm gauge, which suits medium-weight carpet. Thin vinyl, lino or safety flooring laid behind them sits lower than the back of the nosing and leaves a small upstand. This trim fills that step: its high edge meets the back of the nosing and its top face slopes down to the thinner floor.

Which nosings does it work with?

It is made for heavy duty (heavyweight range, 5mm gauge) aluminium stair nosings. It is not needed behind 3.5mm gauge nosings, which are already sized for vinyl, lino and lightweight carpet.

How much do I need?

It is sold per linear metre. Add up the widths of every step where the trim will be fitted, add a little for cutting, and set the quantity to that number of metres.

Can I match it to my nosings?

Yes. It comes in the same nine finishes as our heavy duty nosings, so you can match the nosing exactly or pick a contrasting finish.
