Aluminium Stair Corner Trim 28x28mm – Inner Corner for 5mm LVT

On a staircase this is the trim that finishes the back of the tread, where the LVT turns up into the riser above it, and the foot of the flight where the floor meets the first riser. It does exactly the same job anywhere else a vinyl floor runs into a vertical face, which is why it also earns its keep along a wall, a plinth or an upstand. Wherever that junction falls, it is where a click floor looks its worst: a sawn plank edge, a shadow gap, and an exposed core that takes up mop water. This anodised aluminium internal corner profile closes it properly. The 28 mm base leg is screwed down to the substrate and disappears under the flooring, the 5 mm recess takes the plank edge, and the 28 mm upright leg covers the vertical face above it. What you are left with is a slim metal band and one fine rounded bead, with no cut edge showing anywhere along the run. One thing to be clear about before you order: this is the inside-angle profile, not the tread-edge nosing that wraps the front of a step. On a stair job the two are usually bought together.

Why it works

The plank edge is captured, not just covered

The 5 mm recess is the whole point of the section. The flooring slides in underneath the lip, so the profile holds the edge down as well as hiding it. A trim that simply sits on top of a finished floor depends entirely on its adhesive, and that is what lifts first under a mop head or a trolley wheel. This one is fixed through the substrate before the last plank goes in, so the joint does not rely on glue at all.

Extruded aluminium holds its line

An aluminium extrusion stays straight over a 2.7 m run in a way a flexible PVC trim does not, which matters on a long wall or a wide landing where any waver is read against the skirting line above it. The anodised finish is an integral oxide layer grown into the surface rather than a paint film sprayed onto it, so the scuffing that floor-level trims inevitably take does not chip away and leave bright metal showing through in a different colour.

Knurled inner faces

Both inner faces carry fine parallel knurling. It gives adhesive something to key into if you choose to bed the profile as well as screw it, which is worth doing on a substrate that will not hold a fixing reliably.

The supplier lists this profile for stairs, hallways, landings and kitchens, in both commercial and residential work. On a staircase it goes in the angle at the back of each tread and at the foot of the flight. Off the stairs it earns its place wherever LVT meets a vertical face: along the base of a wall in place of a scotia, around a plinth or a kitchen island, and at the foot of an upstand in a wet-prone room where you would rather not leave an open plank edge.

Choosing the right option

First check that you want the inner corner and not the outer. Hold the profile against the junction: this one wraps an internal angle, where the floor turns up into a vertical face and the two surfaces close towards each other. If your floor instead turns down over an edge — the front of a step, the lip of a landing — you need the outer-edge profile, which is a different section.

On length, 900 mm suits a single tread-to-riser junction or a short return, and most buyers ordering for a flight take one per step. The 2700 mm length works out better per metre and is the right choice for a continuous wall or landing run, since fewer joints means fewer places for the line to break. Measure the run, then allow a little for the cut.

Finish is a straightforward decision between matching the floor and matching the ironmongery. Silver is the safe default against grey and light oak decors; black reads deliberate against dark planks and white walls; gold and champagne suit warmer schemes and brassware.

Installation, use and care

Fit the profile before the final run of flooring goes down. Set it into the angle, mark and drill the substrate, and fix through the pre-drilled countersunk holes using the plugs and screws supplied, checking the line as you go. Then slide the plank edge into the 5 mm recess. Cut to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, and take the burr off the cut end with a file before you offer it up. In service it needs nothing beyond normal floor cleaning: wipe with a damp cloth and avoid abrasive creams and solvent-based cleaners, which will dull an anodised surface.
