Aluminium Stair Nosing 100x39mm Bullnose Heavy Duty Twin Insert

On a staircase carrying several hundred people a day, the step edge is the first thing to wear through and the first thing to cause a fall. This heavy duty aluminium nosing answers both. The tread plate is 100mm deep — wide enough to cover the strip where feet actually land, not just cap the corner — and the 39mm bullnose front wraps down over the step edge so the aluminium takes the impact instead of your floor covering. Two anti-slip PVC bands run the full length of the tread, split by a bare mill aluminium rib.

Why it works

The 5mm gauge is the reason it fits over carpet

The manufacturer is explicit that the 5mm gauge is what allows this profile to be fixed over heavy duty carpet or similar floor covering without sitting proud and forming a trip edge of its own. On a thinner profile you must trim the covering back to the bare tread. The extrusion is alloy 6063 to (DIN) EN 755, composition to BS EN 573-3:2003, and can be anodised to DIN 17611 on request.

Two bands, not one

A single insert marks the edge. Two bands across a 100mm tread cover the whole area a foot lands on, which is what makes this profile worth its extra width on a busy commercial flight. The bands are a REACH compliant flexible PVC extrusion grade the manufacturer describes as designed for non-scuff stair nosing use. It states R11 under DIN 51130:2010 at a corrected 22.9 degrees, and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet. Against the UK Slip Resistance Group guideline of 36 and above for low slip potential, both sit well clear.

The manufacturer publishes a light reflectance value for every insert colour, so you can give an access consultant a number rather than calling a colour high visibility. White reads 79.9 and Black 4.5 against a mill channel of 78.9 — which is why a white insert disappears into the metal and a black one does not.

Choosing the right option

Start with the riser. Look at the step edge from the side: if the front of the step is a rounded nose, this bullnose profile follows it. If the edge is square, or rakes back under the tread, a different profile will sit flush and this will not.

Then measure the going. A 100mm tread is a deep plate and needs a step deep enough to take it without crowding — on a tight domestic flight a 60mm or 70mm profile is the better answer. Choose the length above your step width and cut down on site.

Finally pick the insert on contrast, not taste: against pale terrazzo or concrete use Black, Brown or Midnight Grey, and against a dark floor a pale insert reads better. The LRV figures above make that decision for you.

Installation, use and care

The manufacturer's method is adhesive and screws, not one or the other. Steps must be dry, clean, level and free of debris. Where the profile is pre-drilled, use the holes to mark drilling positions, then drill and plug. Apply adhesive to the underside, set the nosing down, screw it home, and fit the insert or insert pip over the screw head. Clean inserts with a neutral detergent, rinse, and let them dry before taking traffic. Polish the aluminium with steel wool or a cloth, and never use solvent cleaners on it.
