Description

Tiled stairs nearly always fail in the same place: the front arris of the tread. Porcelain and natural stone are strong across the face and brittle at a sharp 90-degree edge, so once one nose chips the rest of the flight tends to follow. This two-part profile is the detail that prevents it. A heavy-duty aluminium carrier is bedded into the tile adhesive with its flange sitting underneath the tread tile and its front section covering the riser edge, and a semi-flexible PVC tread then snaps into the carrier to give a textured, contrasting walking surface. It is fitted as part of the tiling rather than stuck down afterwards, which is why the finished edge reads as part of the floor instead of a later repair.

Why it works

The tile edge is enclosed, not just covered

The manufacturer describes the flange as fitting neatly beneath the tread tile and over the riser, and that is the whole point of a tile-in profile. The vulnerable arris ends up buried inside the trim rather than exposed at the surface, so foot traffic, trolley wheels and vacuum heads strike aluminium and PVC instead of glazed ceramic. With a surface-mounted strip the tile edge is still there underneath, waiting to crack. Here it is not.

Two materials doing two different jobs

The carrier is heavy-duty aluminium, chosen for rigidity so the nose does not deflect under load and the adhesive bond line stays intact. The tread is a co-extruded semi-flexible PVC that snaps securely into the carrier. Because the two are separate, the part that takes the wear is not the part carrying the load, and the softer tread absorbs impact that would otherwise go straight into the tile bed.

A tread surface that behaves differently from the tile

The PVC is finished with a textured, anti-slip tread. A polished porcelain stair is at its most dangerous on the nose, where the foot lands with the least contact area, and a ribbed polymer band changes the texture underfoot at exactly that point. Black or grey also reads as a visual line against a pale tile, which helps people pick out the step edge on the way down.

Where it is used

The manufacturer positions this profile for indoor commercial stairs, public access areas and domestic staircases. In practice that means tiled flights in houses, flats and apartment blocks, entrance and lobby steps in small offices and shared buildings, access stairs in hotels and guest houses, and showroom or retail steps finished in porcelain, ceramic or stone. Because it is specified at tiling stage, it suits new builds and full stair refurbishments rather than patch repairs to a finished flight.

Choosing the right option

There are two decisions to make. The first is height, and your tile sets it rather than your preference: choose 10mm for a 10mm tile and 12mm for a 12mm tile, because the flange has to finish flush with the underside of the tile so that the tread surface and the tile surface land in the same plane. Measure the tile itself rather than the tile plus adhesive, since the adhesive bed takes up the flange thickness. If your tile falls between the two sizes, the manufacturer states the profile suits 10mm to 12mm, so take the nearer size and let the bed absorb the difference.

The second decision is colour. Black gives the strongest line against a pale porcelain or limestone tile and is the usual choice where step definition matters most. Grey is the quieter option and sits better with mid-tone, concrete-effect and darker stone floors, where a black band tends to read as a stripe rather than as an edge.

Installation, use and care

This is a tiling operation, not a joinery one. Set out the riser and tread tiles first, then bed the nosing flange into the adhesive on the tread so the front section sits tight over the riser edge, and lay the tread tile over the flange while the adhesive is still workable. Cut the aluminium with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, and dry-fit before committing. The PVC tread snaps into the carrier once the adhesive has gone off. In service, sweep and damp-mop as you would the surrounding tile, and keep solvent cleaners and abrasive pads off the PVC.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit this to a staircase that is already tiled?

Not without lifting tiles. The flange has to sit underneath the tread tile, so the front row of tiles needs to come up and be relaid with the profile bedded in. If the flight is finished and you would rather not disturb it, a surface-mounted or retro-fit nosing is the right product instead.

Which height do I need?

Match it to the tile thickness: the 10mm profile for a 10mm tile, the 12mm profile for a 12mm tile. The manufacturer states the range this profile is designed for as 10mm to 12mm.

Can the PVC tread be taken out?

The two parts are separate, and the manufacturer describes the PVC as a co-extruded insert that snaps securely into the aluminium carrier. Whether a tread that has been installed can be unclipped and refitted cleanly is not something the manufacturer states, so we will not promise it as a maintenance route.

Is it suitable for outside steps?

Not as specified. The manufacturer lists indoor commercial stairs, public access areas and domestic staircases, and publishes no external or frost-cycle data for this profile. For exposed steps, choose a profile the maker rates for external use.

Does it have a slip rating?

No figure is published for this line. The tread is described by the manufacturer as textured and anti-slip, but no R value, pendulum test value or BS 7976-2 result is given. If your project needs a tested figure, ask us and we will request it from the manufacturer before you order.

Had to sort out the floor in our catering kitchen ASAP, and this did the trick. It was such a breeze to fit onto the ceramic floor tiles even under the those bright kitchen lights, not slipping during installation either. Its taken heavy foot traffic brilliantly over a few weeks without showing any damage, making it perfect for getting in place when youre back-of-house isnt glamorous but needs to last.

Came faster than I thought, though the packaging left a bit to be desired. Once installed on our tiled steps outdoors, its slip-resistance really made a difference during those wet British autumn nights. The pvc aluminium stair nosing doesn’t just fit nicely; it keeps everyone safe when rushing in and out with muddy shoes.

Well-engineered and straightforward. I was pleased with how easily the pvc aluminium stair nosing cut to the required length for our museums entrance. You just need basic tools, and it aligns seamlessly with existing tiles without any fuss. Its durability should keep vintage mosaic edges safe for years, so Id happily install this again if needed.

Got this for our tiled steps at the metro entrance, and its given them a slick finish that stands out even in low light. The pvc stair nosing blends perfectly with the busy backdrop while solving the constant chipping issue we had. Happy to report it’s coped well under everyday hustle and bustle.
