Aluminium Stair Nosing 45x40mm Surface Mount Anti-Slip Step Edge Trim

Some step edges need more than a token trim over the corner. Where a tread is thick, where the nose has been chipped back, or where a tiled step has lost its arris, a shallow profile just highlights the damage it is supposed to hide. This one has a 40mm front face — nearly as deep as the 45mm top plate is wide — so it wraps a long way down the riser and covers the whole exposed edge in one piece. The top is ribbed across its full width for grip, and the profile is screw-fixed through holes that arrive already drilled and countersunk. Silver anodised aluminium, 2mm wall, in 1.0m and 2.5m lengths.

Why it works

The 40mm face is the whole point

Most surface-mount stair nosings drop 20–25mm, which is enough to cap a neat edge on a thin floor covering and not much more. At 40mm this one keeps going: it covers the full thickness of a tiled tread plus its adhesive bed, or a chipped concrete arris, or the cut edge of a thick engineered board, and still lands flat on the riser below. If you have measured your step nose and a standard trim comes up short, this is the profile that closes the gap.

Retrofit, not rebuild

It sits on top of the finished tread rather than being bedded into it, so it goes onto a staircase that is already tiled, laminated or boarded. Nothing has to come up. The trade-off is honest and worth knowing before you order: the 2mm plate stands 2mm proud of the tread surface, so there is a small lip at the front of each step. If you need a finish that is completely flush with the floor, you need a tile-in profile fitted during the floor installation, not this.

Ribbed and anodised

Fine grooves run the full 45mm width of the top face, breaking up what would otherwise be a smooth metal surface at the point where a foot is most likely to skid. The supplier describes it as a grooved anti-slip top surface. Anodising hardens the outer skin of the aluminium rather than coating it, so the finish does not flake off where feet land.

Where it is used

The supplier lists it for laminate, vinyl, tile and wooden stairs in commercial and domestic settings, and names schools, offices and residential properties. In practice it earns its keep on tiled entrance steps and communal stairs where the nose is deep, and on refurbishment work where existing edges are already damaged. It is not listed for carpeted stairs — the deep face is designed to sit against a hard riser, not to clamp a pile edge.

Choosing the right option

Is 40mm the face you want? Measure the exposed front edge of your step from the top surface down to where the riser starts. If that is 30mm or more, this is the profile. If it is 20mm or so, our 44 x 23mm ribbed nosing is the slimmer version of the same idea, comes in silver or gold and in five lengths, and will look less heavy on a domestic flight.

Length. A standard domestic stair is 750–900mm wide, so the 1.0m covers one step with a trim. The 2.5m is the one to buy for a flight: cut into two 1.2m pieces for wide commercial stairs, or three shorter pieces for a domestic run, which works out cheaper per step than buying 1.0m lengths and wasting the offcuts. Measure every tread — stair widths are rarely identical top to bottom.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length with a hacksaw and a fine metal blade, or a chop saw with a non-ferrous blade, and file the cut end smooth. Offer the profile up with the deep leg flat against the riser and the ribbed plate flat on the tread, then mark through the existing countersunk holes. Drill pilot holes, plug them if you are fixing into tile, concrete or masonry rather than timber, and screw down until the heads sit flush in the countersinks. Take care drilling through tile: use a tile bit and low speed, or you will crack the tread you are trying to protect. Clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which dull anodising permanently.
