Aluminium Stair Nosing 62x33mm Rake Back Anti Slip for Sloping Steps, 2.77m

Not every step edge is square. Cast concrete flights, terrazzo treads and older timber stairs are often finished with a splayed or sloping riser, and a nosing with a straight vertical leg will either stand proud of it or leave a shadow gap behind the front face. This 62 x 33mm aluminium stair nosing solves that: the same 62mm tread plate and full-width slip-resistant insert as the square-edge profile, but with the front face raked back so it follows the angle of the step rather than fighting it. Supplied in 2.77m stock lengths in a mill finish, with the insert in black, ice grey or high-visibility yellow.

Why it works

The raked face closes the gap

A rake back leans the 33mm front leg back from the leading edge instead of dropping it straight down. On a step whose riser already slopes, that is the difference between a nosing that sits flush against the face and one that only touches at the top. Flush contact matters for two reasons a specifier cares about: the adhesive bed is continuous rather than wedge-shaped, and there is no void behind the leg for grit and mop water to collect in. It also reads as a softer, less industrial line on the flight, which is why raked profiles get specified in hotels, care settings and refurbishments where a square metal edge would look like an afterthought.

The insert reaches the leading edge

The manufacturer describes a mechanism that holds the insert in the channel while giving it “heightened exposure to the leading edge”. More of the grippy surface sits where a descending foot actually strikes, rather than behind a lip of bare aluminium. The manufacturer states that this increased foot contact with the slip-resistant insert reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls on stairs designed to meet the guidance in Approved Document M and BS 8300-2:2018.

Five millimetres of aluminium

The carrier is extruded from 6063 aluminium at a 5mm gauge, anodised to DIN 17611 and produced to the EN 755 extrusion standard. That gauge is what lets it sit over a finished floor covering instead of being recessed into one, and it is why the nose takes trolley and ladder traffic without denting. The underside is keyed so adhesive grips, and a small rear return lip gives the carpet, laminate, vinyl or tile a closed joint to butt into.

Refurbishment work on concrete and terrazzo flights where the existing step nose is splayed; hotel, care home and residential-block stairwells where a square edge looks too hard; school and office stairs being recovered without recasting the treads. The manufacturer classes the profile as commercial and commercial heavy duty and lists it for carpet, laminate, LVT and tile.

Choosing the right option

First decide rake back or square edge, because that is the only real difference between this and its sibling — same 62mm tread, same 33mm drop, same three inserts, same price. Put a straight edge against the front of your step. If it sits flat against the riser, you want the square edge version. If it touches at the top and gapes at the bottom, the step is splayed and this raked profile is the one that will sit flush. On a refurbishment where the treads vary from flight to flight, the rake back is the more forgiving choice because a small angular mismatch disappears into the adhesive bed instead of showing as a line.

Colour is a separate decision, and it is worth making from the floor covering rather than the walls: black on pale stone and light carpet, ice grey where you want definition without a hard break, yellow where the edge has to be unmistakable. Installation, use and care

The manufacturer's method is bonded and screwed, not one or the other. Make sure the steps are dry, clean, level and free of debris. If the bar is pre-drilled, use the holes to mark the drilling positions, then drill and plug the step. Apply a suitable adhesive to the underside of the nosing, set it down so the raked face beds against the riser, and screw it home with the appropriate size of screw. The insert — or the insert pip — then covers the screw head. For cleaning, the manufacturer specifies a neutral detergent on the insert followed by a thorough rinse with clean water, and says the aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Solvent cleaners should never be used on it.
