Description

This is the cut-to-size version of the AN51/55R raked-back stair nosing: the same 62mm tread plate, 55mm front face raked back at 83°, and 5.0mm gauge aluminium alloy 6063 T6 extrusion, cut to whatever length your flight actually needs rather than to a stock bar. Enter the length in millimetres, anywhere from 700mm up to the manufacturer's 2500mm maximum, and each piece is cut to that measurement with a cutting tolerance of ±5mm. Pricing is per metre, so you pay for the length you order.

If your going is close to a standard 1m or 2m bar, the stock-length version of this nosing is usually the simpler order. Custom cut lengths are non-returnable except where there is a fault; this does not affect your statutory rights.

Why it works

The tread plate is recessed to take a full-width infill that sits proud of the metal, and that is what your foot lands on. The manufacturer publishes slip resistance values (SRV) by infill family: castellated PVC at 76 wet and 85 dry; Olympic Grip at 71 wet and 102 dry; smooth textured PVC at 56 wet and 65 dry; and ATI49.5 aluminium at 54 wet and 82 dry. These are the manufacturer's stated figures for the infill materials, not our own test results.

At 5.0mm gauge the extrusion stays flat under load rather than dishing between fixings. The raked front face leans in under the step rather than hanging vertically, which keeps the nose out of the walking line and gives the step edge an angled shadow instead of a square block. The back edge interlocks with the ANE nap detail, ANEXT tread extender and ANRE25 ramp extension. The manufacturer specifies it for interior stairs with low to medium traffic volumes; it is part of their Designer Collection, which is why it comes in six carrier finishes rather than the usual three.

Choosing the right option

Finish is the aluminium carrier — the metal around the infill and down the raked face. Colour is the infill that sits in the channel, which is why some combinations read as two aluminium names. Mill aluminium is the untreated extrusion and the cheapest of the six; satin and polished are anodised and hold their appearance better in a shared stairwell; black anodised, bronze and light bronze exist for appearance rather than performance. Castellated PVC is the default infill and carries the highest wet figure of the four families, so keep smooth textured away from entrance flights. If the stair is external, or takes heavy traffic and impact, this is the wrong profile — the manufacturer produces a separate AN51/55R GRP version in mill aluminium with a glass-fibre reinforced insert for those conditions.

Installation, use and care

Measure each going before ordering and allow for the ±5mm cutting tolerance. The tread plate is drilled and screw-fixed to the substrate using size 8 screws at regular centres; on timber steps the profile can be rebated so the plate finishes flush with the going. Fit the nosing before the floor covering is dressed up to the interlocking back edge, then trim the covering to abut the profile. Clean with a neutral floor cleaner and a damp mop; avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which cut through anodised and bronze coatings and expose the aluminium beneath.
