This listing is the same 66.5mm x 30mm aluminium bullnose stair nosing as our 1 metre and 2 metre stock bars, cut in the workshop to the exact length you specify between 700mm and 3200mm, to a tolerance of plus or minus 5mm, and priced per centimetre so you pay only for the metal on your stair. Why order a bullnose nosing cut to size

Clean ends on a curved profile

A square-edged nosing is easy to cut on site. A bullnose is not: the curved shell tends to close up or tear under a hacksaw, and a slightly skewed end shows badly where the rounded front meets a wall. Workshop cutting with a fine blade gives a square, deburred end on every piece, and on a polished or satin bar it avoids the scratches that a site cut leaves around the nose.

Every step to its own measurement

On a refurbished flight the goings often differ by a few millimetres from step to step, and a winder or a landing step can be a different width entirely. Ordering each length individually means no offcuts, no wasted bar, and no compromise where the nosing meets a newel or a balustrade.

The same profile, the same rate

This is not a different product. It is the same 4mm gauge extrusion with the ramped back edge, the 30mm rounded front and the 26mm inside leg, the same three finishes and the same 32 inserts with the same published slip and light reflectance figures. The price per centimetre is the stock 1 metre price divided by 100, so a 1200mm length costs exactly what a 1000mm bar plus 200mm would.

Where it is used

The manufacturer rates the profile for medium to heavy foot traffic in interior settings such as hotels, pubs, clubs, cafes, shops, schools, commercial offices and apartment buildings, on stone and timber stairs and on stairs finished with ceramic tiles, laminate, LVT, vinyl or lino. Cut lengths are most often ordered for refurbishment work, listed buildings with irregular stairs, and residential flights between two walls where a stock bar would have to be trimmed at both ends.

Approved Document M treats two surfaces as visually contrasting where their light reflectance values differ by more than 30 points. The manufacturer publishes an LRV for every insert, so choose one at least 30 points from your floor finish. Measuring up

Measure the finished going at the front edge of every tread, not just the bottom one, because they are rarely identical. Number the steps from the top down and note where each flight and landing starts, so the cutting list matches the building when the box arrives. Between two walls take 3mm to 5mm off the wall-to-wall figure so the piece drops in without scraping the plaster. On an open string, where the end of the nosing is visible, the manufacturer's advice is to measure 50mm oversize and trim on site for a perfect fit to the return. If the stair is carpeted or tiled after the nosing goes down, measure to the finished surface, not the bare step.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Mill for most commercial work and the lowest cost; satin where you want a soft, even sheen that hides marks; polished for reception areas and residential stairs where the nosing is a feature.

Insert. Castellated PVC as the default. Olympic Grip on an entrance stair where wet shoes arrive. Smooth textured PVC where appearance leads on a dry stair. An aluminium insert where the nosing should read as one piece of metal, accepting the lower wet slip figure.

Length. If most of your treads are close to 1m or 2m, the stock listing will reach you sooner. Use this listing when the lengths vary, when the flight is between two walls, or when a site cut on a curved profile is not something you want to attempt.

Installation, use and care

Steps must be sound, clean, dry and flat; make good a broken arris first. Drill the tread plate and fix with size 6 countersunk screws at roughly 250mm to 300mm centres, starting about 50mm from each end. Pre-drilled pieces for concealing plugs or retro-fit inserts can be quoted. Clean with a damp cloth and neutral detergent; avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on anodised inserts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter the length?

Choose the finish and insert, then type the length in millimetres in the length box. The page converts it to centimetres, shows the price for that piece, and adds it to the basket as one line. Repeat for each different length.

Can I mix lengths in one order?

Yes. Add each length as its own line; a flight of twelve steps at twelve different goings is a normal order.

Are cut lengths returnable?

Custom cut lengths are made to your figures and are non-returnable except for faults, so measure twice. The stock 1m and 2m bars are returnable in the usual way.

Is it the same price as the stock bars?

Yes, per metre. The per-centimetre price is the 1 metre price divided by 100.

Ordering and delivery

Cut lengths are made to order; allow a few working days on top of a stock bar. Standard UK mainland delivery is a flat rate, and pieces over 2m travel as a long-length parcel. Order a short sample length first if you want to check a finish or colour against your floor.
