The external version of our 66mm x 32mm ramped slimline nosing. The aluminium carrier and the tapered back edge are unchanged; the insert is swapped for a harder quartz-loaded grade the manufacturer rates for indoor and outdoor use. A green photoluminescent strip runs along the leading edge, charging from daylight or building lighting and glowing on its own once that light is removed. There is no wiring and no LED.
The manufacturer describes this insert as a blend of PVC, silica quartz and polymeric plasticiser, stating that it meets BS 3261:1973 for sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles. It has a three-dimensional pyramid surface and a polyurethane coating that reduces dirt retention, and is stated to resist UV, oil, grease, petrol, salt, dilute acids and alkalis. Published slip figures are a DIN 51130:2010 classification of R11 at 24.7° corrected and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 57 dry and PTV 47 wet, both above the 36 PTV low-slip-potential mark. It is listed for concrete, timber, tile, vinyl, steel and checker plate.
The back edge of the tread plate tapers onto the covering rather than stopping square, which reduces the trip lip and stops wheeled traffic catching the corner — useful outdoors where grit collects against any raised edge. The photoluminescent element is europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at 520nm, with 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation and a highly visible afterglow beyond 600 minutes. The carrier is 6063 aluminium to BS EN 573-3:2003.
External access and entrance steps, fire escapes, service yards and car park flights, and internal stairs wanting a mains-independent escape marker. The standard-insert version of this profile is internal only but comes in eleven colours at a lower price.

Length first: 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock extrusion lengths, and 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same profile. Measure the full tread width, order the next length up and cut back on site.
On colour, the manufacturer publishes an LRV for each of the four external-grade inserts. Against dark tarmac or concrete, White at 49.9 or Yellow at 48.1 open the widest gap; against pale stone or light vinyl, Black at 4.6 or Dolphin Grey at 11.5 do the same in reverse. These figures are specific to the external insert, so do not carry one across from the internal version.
Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it down, then screw down and fit the insert or insert pip over the screw heads. Outdoors use mechanical fixings, and make sure the ramped back edge beds down properly.
Clean with a bristle brush and warm soapy water. The aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Do not use solvent cleaners; organic solvents soften the insert.
Does this take an LED strip?
No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that charges from ambient light and re-emits it in the dark.
What makes this the outdoor version?
The insert — a harder quartz-loaded grade suitable for indoor and outdoor environments, where the standard insert carries no published external rating.
What does ramped mean?
The back edge of the tread plate tapers onto the floor covering instead of stopping square, which reduces the trip lip and stops grit and wheels catching the corner.
Will it fit a sloping riser?
Not flush. This is a straight-edge profile with a vertical back leg. On a raked riser, choose one of our raked-back profiles.
Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming. All four insert colours are available in all six lengths, and UK delivery is one flat rate whatever the order size.

Turned up fast, packed like a pro. Installed it on the outdoor stairs at our warehouse and, despite the tools scattered about making things chaotic, it does a solid job on keeping footing steady. Quite pleasant outcome. Had to fiddle about cutting and fitting the edging perfectly onto our stone office steps, but it came together in the end. The stair nosing gives the steps a surprisingly smart finish up close, even more so under our tungsten lighting.
