A 66mm x 32mm slimline profile with a ramped tread plate, meaning it tapers down onto the floor covering rather than presenting a square lip at the back. That is the detail worth paying attention to on a stair where trolleys, wheeled cases or a mop cart cross the nosing daily, and on any flight where a raised back edge would collect dirt. A green photoluminescent strip runs the leading edge, charging from the building's ordinary lighting and glowing on its own once that light is removed.
Why it works
Ramped, not stepped
The back edge of the plate is tapered so the transition onto the covering is gradual. It reduces the trip lip, it stops the back edge acting as a dirt line, and it makes the nosing less likely to be caught and lifted by a wheel. On a busy commercial stair that is the difference between a nosing that stays put and one that works loose at the back corner.
The glow strip is chemistry, not electronics
The manufacturer identifies the photoluminescent element as europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at a peak wavelength of 520nm, with afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation and a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes. It recharges whenever the stair is lit and cannot fail in a power cut. For the insert, the manufacturer states a DIN 51130:2010 classification of R11 at 22.9° corrected and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet — both well clear of the 36 PTV mark the UK Slip Resistance Group associates with low slip potential. The carrier is 6063 aluminium to BS EN 573-3:2003.
Where it is used
Hospitals, care homes, hotels and schools where cleaning equipment and wheeled traffic cross the stair, plus offices and apartment blocks generally. The slim section suits a standard tread depth, and the ramped back edge suits vinyl and lino as much as carpet.

Choosing the right option
Length first: 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock extrusion lengths; 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same profile for shorter flights. Measure the full tread width, order the next length up and cut back on site.
Then insert colour. Contrast guidance is expressed as a difference in Light Reflectance Value between the step edge and the floor around it, and the manufacturer publishes an LRV for all eleven inserts — they are in the table above. Against a dark floor, White at 79.9 or Yellow at 55.7 give the widest separation; against a pale floor, Black at 4.5 or Brown at 9.1 do the same in reverse. Work the difference out against your own covering rather than choosing on appearance.
Installation, use and care
Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it onto the step, then screw down and fit the insert or insert pip over the screw heads. Make sure the ramped back edge beds down properly onto the covering — that taper only works if it is in contact.
Clean the insert with a neutral detergent and rinse with clean water, drying before traffic returns. The aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Do not use solvent cleaners on either part.
Frequently asked questions
Does this take an LED strip?
No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that charges from ambient light and re-emits it in the dark.
What does ramped mean here?
The back edge of the tread plate tapers down onto the floor covering instead of stopping square. It reduces the trip lip and stops wheeled traffic catching the back corner.
Can I use it outside?
Not as specified. The manufacturer publishes no external rating for this insert. The same profile is offered with an externally rated insert — choose that version for exposed steps.
Will it fit a sloping riser?
Not flush. This is a straight-edge profile with a vertical back leg. On a raked riser, choose one of our raked-back profiles.
Ordering and delivery
Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming. All eleven insert colours are available in all six lengths, and UK delivery is one flat rate whatever the order size.
