Description

A rake-back aluminium stair nosing with a photoluminescent strip along its leading edge: 67mm across the tread, 55mm down the face of the step, and a green band that charges from the light already in the building and keeps showing the step edge once that light goes out. Eleven insert colours, six lengths from 1.0m to 3.22m.

The rake-back geometry is the first thing to get right. The 55mm front leg slopes back under the step rather than dropping plumb, so it follows a riser that is already raked and closes onto the face without packing behind it. On a vertical riser a square-front nosing is correct; on a raked or splayed one, this is.

Why fitters choose this profile

The glow strip needs no wiring

The green band at the front of the tread is photoluminescent, not electric. The manufacturer identifies the material as europium-doped strontium aluminate, peak wavelength 520nm, and states an afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation, a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes, and a total afterglow duration of more than 3000 minutes before it decays to 0.32 mcd/m². It charges from daylight, fluorescent tubes or tungsten lamps: no connection to make, no transformer, no driver, nothing that fails because a circuit did. In a power cut, or when smoke takes out the lighting mid-evacuation, every step edge stays readable as a continuous green line.

The insert carries the slip resistance, and the numbers are published

Behind the glow band sits the coloured PVC insert — a wide band set into its own channel, with a plain mill aluminium plate running behind it to the back of the 67mm tread. It is a band, not a covering over the whole tread. The manufacturer describes the insert as a flexible PVC extrusion carrying a three-dimensional pyramid pattern and a polyurethane coating that reduces dirt retention, and for it states DIN 51130:2010 category R11, from an inclined platform test averaging 22.9°, and BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 66 dry and PTV 54 wet. Those are the manufacturer's stated figures, not our own testing. Published UK guidance treats a PTV of 36 and above as a low slip potential.

Eleven insert colours, each with a published LRV

Visual contrast on a stair is argued in light reflectance values, and the manufacturer publishes an LRV for every insert colour on this profile. They run from Black at 4.5 to White at 79.9, with the mill aluminium channel at 78.9. The full table is below, so you can quote a number rather than a colour name.

Where it is used

Commercial and public stairs that must stay usable when the lighting fails: theatres and auditoria, hotels, transport interchanges, car park stair cores, schools, offices, and back-of-house stairwells where emergency lighting is thin. The manufacturer lists it for carpet, laminate, LVT and tile finishes in commercial and industrial interiors, and designates the profile DDA compliant.

Choosing the right option

Two choices. Colour is the PVC insert in the channel — the glow strip is green on all of them, so what you pick is the band sitting immediately behind it. Remember it is a band and not the full tread: the rest of the 67mm plate stays mill aluminium, which the manufacturer puts at LRV 78.9. Length is the bar you receive, priced per bar.

On colour, work from the LRV table rather than the swatch. Dark tread covering, take a light insert; light covering, Black at 4.5 or Brown at 9.1 does the work. Yellow at 55.7 is the usual choice on a designated escape route. Midnight Grey and Dolphin Grey are the discreet options and sit close to much commercial carpet, so check the difference before committing.

On length, 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock bars and the shorter lengths are cut from them, so the cost per metre works out much the same whichever you take. Choose on the going and on what will physically go up the stairwell rather than on price per metre — the shorter options exist for single-going stairs, and for jobs where getting a full-length bar round a half landing is the real constraint.

Installation, use and care

Work to the manufacturer's sequence. Steps must be dry, clean and reasonably level. Cut each bar to the going with a mitre saw and a non-ferrous blade. If the profile is pre-drilled, mark through the holes, then drill and plug. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive and screw it down — neither alone is the specified method. Fit the insert, or the pip over the screw head, last. In service, clean with a neutral detergent, rinse, and let it dry before traffic. Keep solvent cleaners off the aluminium; the manufacturer is explicit about that.

Frequently asked questions

Does the glowing strip need an electrical supply?

No. It is photoluminescent, not powered: it absorbs ambient light and releases it in the dark. No wiring, no transformer, no electrician, and nothing in it can fail during a power cut.

How long does the strip stay visible after the lights go out?

The manufacturer states a highly visible afterglow of more than 600 minutes, and a total duration of more than 3000 minutes before brightness falls to 0.32 mcd/m², measured after ten minutes of excitation. It is brightest immediately after the lights fail.

How much of the 67mm tread is coloured insert?

Less than half of it. The nose edge carries a narrow mill aluminium lip, then the green photoluminescent strip, then the coloured PVC insert band; behind that the profile is plain mill aluminium back to the floor covering. If you are working a contrast calculation, the insert band and the aluminium plate are separate surfaces with separate LRVs.

Which insert colour should I choose for visual contrast?

Pick on the published LRV, not the name. Values run from Black at 4.5 to White at 79.9, and the mill channel is 78.9. Compare the insert against the tread covering, and take the widest difference the scheme accepts.

Can I use this profile on external steps?

This build is listed for commercial and industrial interiors. The same 67x55mm rake-back profile is made with an external-grade insert for weather-exposed steps — ask us and we will quote that version instead.

Do I need to screw it down, or will adhesive do?

Both. The manufacturer's method is to drill and plug the step, bed the nosing on adhesive, then screw it down. Adhesive alone is not the specified fixing on a stair edge.

Ordering and delivery

Choose the insert colour and the bar length; the price shown is the price for that bar, with nothing added at checkout but delivery. UK mainland delivery is a single flat rate however many bars you order, so a full flight costs the same to deliver as one step. Other lengths, anodised finishes, the Cloud, Haze and Sand insert colours and the external-insert version are all available to order — send the going, the number of steps and the finish and we will quote it.

Came well-packaged and obviously very sturdy. Installed it on the gallery stairs, and Ive got to say, handles wet patches like a champ while keeping its grip in swarms of visitors. The weights perfect for heavy use, really does give confidence even in slippery conditions underfoot.

Took a punt on this when I spotted how quickly it arrived! Came securely boxed, which was reassuring as I needed it for some stone steps. While unpacking, the thoughtful design with clear instructions made fixing the stair nosing smooth sailing—works just right, especially brightening up under low lighting conditions at dusk.

Installed it on the back steps months ago, expecting typical wear and tear, but its held up remarkably well. The luminescent strip stays bright enough even after cloudy days, which was a nice surprise. No signs of slipping or fade despite daily traffic from our busy household, making it more durable than I assumed.

Got this for a safety upgrade on the old university library steps and couldnt be happier with the result. The aluminium stair nosing made the edges so much more visible, especially in low light, making it easy to install was just icing on the cake. Installing them took hardly any time at all, and now navigating those stairs feels both safer and smarter.

Efficient fitting product. Installed the stair nosing in our warehouse on the metal stair edges, and it was a breeze to cut down to the exact length needed with standard tools. The photoluminescent strip helps in low-light situations, which is a real bonus in high traffic areas after hours. Can’t fault it for value whatsoever.
