Description

A 56mm-riser square-edge stair nosing for public and commercial stairs

If you are edging a stair that has to satisfy an access audit — an office core, a school, a clinic, a shop, a block of flats — the dimension that matters is the one most nosings lack: the depth of the face on the riser. This profile drops a full 56mm down the front of the step from a 70mm tread plate, at a 3.5mm gauge. The manufacturer lists it in its DDA range and prints a Building Regulations compliance mark on its own product drawing. It fits square-nosed steps, ramps down at the back under vinyl, LVT, wood, lino or lightweight carpet, and its single channel holds one wide replaceable anti-slip PVC insert in 19 colours. The dark and mirror finishes are on a companion listing.

Why it works

The riser face is where most nosings fall short

Approved Document K asks, for buildings other than dwellings, for a visually contrasting material at least 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser (clause 1.7a). A standard 32mm profile cannot meet the riser half of that on its own. This face is 56mm, so a descending user sees a continuous band of metal down the top of every riser as well as the insert on the going, and the 70mm tread plate clears the tread figure when its colour contrasts with the floor.

Contrast you can design, not hope for

Approved Document M sets the contrast test numerically: a difference of more than 30 points in light reflectance value between adjacent surfaces, or 20 points where lighting exceeds 200 lux. The manufacturer publishes an LRV for every insert colour, from Premium Black at 4.48 to White at 73.69, so you can pick an insert that is provably 30 points from the floor covering instead of guessing that a grey will contrast with a grey.

Slip performance, stated by the manufacturer

The manufacturer's safety documentation pack reports a BS 7976-2 pendulum test (Floor Safe Ltd, report FS10174, linished stair tread sample): 70 PTV dry, 58 PTV wet, both low slip potential. We carry those figures as the manufacturer states them; we have not tested the profile ourselves.

✓ Building Regulations — what this profile gives you

The manufacturer marks this profile Building Regulations compliant on its own drawing and lists it in its DDA range. It rests on a 56mm riser face and a 70mm tread plate, both above the 55mm minimum in Approved Document K 1.7a, plus a published LRV for every insert. Compliance belongs to the installed stair: the insert and finish still have to contrast with your floor, and Building Control signs it off.

Where it's used

Office and education stair cores, healthcare circulation, retail, leisure, apartment blocks and student accommodation: any public stair with an access statement to answer. It suits square-edged steps with a hard or resilient floor finish; a raked or bullnosed step needs the matching profile in the same range.

Choosing the right option

Check the step first: this profile needs a square nose, and on a raked or bullnosed step it will not sit tight to the riser.

Choose the insert by contrast, not by taste. Take the LRV of the floor covering that meets the nosing and pick an insert at least 30 points away: Premium Black (4.48), Dark Blue (5.06) or Dark Green (7.96) against a pale floor; White (73.69), Oyster (58.10) or Yellow (55.35) against a dark one. Hazard, the black and yellow band, is for a step that must be flagged as a hazard in its own right, and on this range it is priced the same as the plain colours.

Pick the finish last. Mill Finish is the standard and the most economical; Bright Polished, Satin Gold and Satin Bronze are chosen to match handrails and ironmongery. Dark Bronze, Satin Black, Mirroflect Silver and Mirrorflect Gold are on the companion listing. Measure the going and take the next stock length up; all three lengths cut down on site.

Installation, use and care

Fix to a clean, sound, dry substrate: drilled and screwed through the tread plate into plugs, or bonded with a construction adhesive where drilling is not wanted. Lay the floor covering over the ramped rear edge. Cut with a fine-tooth blade and de-burr the ends. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent; keep abrasive pads, solvents, bleach and acidic cleaners off both the insert and the metal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 56mm face make the stair compliant on its own?

No single component does. The face gives you the riser dimension and the published LRVs let you meet the contrast test, but the result depends on the insert and finish against your floor, and Building Control confirms the finished stair.

What is the difference from the 32mm square-edge profile?

Same tread, gauge, inserts and finishes; the face is 56mm against 32mm, which is what takes the riser past the 55mm regulatory figure.
