Description

This is the nosing to specify when you are covering an existing floor and the stair has to take real traffic. The 78.5mm tread plate carries a carborundum grit insert rather than a PVC one, and the back edge is raked so it lands onto a finished floor covering without leaving a lip to trip on or to catch a mop.

Why the carborundum insert matters here

Aluminium oxide grit in a resin matrix is the hardest of the common anti-slip infills. Unlike a ribbed PVC insert it does not burnish smooth under footfall, and unlike a bonded grit tape it cannot peel. On an entrance step, a plant room stair or anywhere boots arrive wet, that is the difference between a nosing that still performs in year eight and one that quietly stopped working in year two.

The raked back

The rear edge tapers down onto the tread surface, so the nosing can be fitted over existing vinyl, LVT, laminate or tile without lifting the floor first. That makes it a refurbishment profile: it closes the joint rather than butting against it. On a new lay where the covering will be brought up to the nosing, a square back is the better detail.

Choosing the right option

Finish. Mill is the plain untreated aluminium and the usual choice for industrial and back-of-house stairs. Satin is anodised, holds its appearance better in a public area, and resists finger marking.

Drilling. Undrilled lets you set the fixings out on site to miss joists and existing screw lines. Pre-drilled arrives countersunk on centres and is faster across a long flight.

Length. Order the bar that covers your going in one piece. If the treads are an awkward width, or every flight differs, order from the cut-to-size version of this profile, cut to the millimetre between 250mm and 2750mm.

Installation, use and care

The substrate must be sound, clean and dry, and the existing floor covering firmly bonded where the raked edge will land. Fix at roughly 300mm centres, starting about 50mm from each end, and bed the nose in a structural adhesive as well as screwing on external stairs. Clean with a stiff brush and water. Do not use acid or solvent cleaners on the resin matrix, and do not attack the grit with a wire wheel.
