Most anti-slip stair nosings are not rated to go outside. The standard PVC insert on our other 91x32mm profile is an internal specification, and the manufacturer says so. This one is the exception: same wide 91mm x 32mm aluminium section, same twin channel, but fitted with the coarse Tredsafe insert that the manufacturer's own selection guide marks as suitable for external use. It is what you order for entrance steps, fire escapes and anywhere the stair sees weather. It also carries the same green photoluminescent strip along the leading edge, which charges from daylight or the building's lighting and glows once that light is gone.
Why it works
The insert is a different material, not a different colour
Tredsafe is not PVC with a texture printed on it. The manufacturer describes it as a blend of PVC, silica quartz and polymeric plasticiser, extruded into a homogeneous hard-wearing sheet with a three-dimensional pyramid pattern and a polyurethane coating that reduces dirt retention. That is where the grip in the wet comes from, and it is why the surface looks and feels coarse rather than smooth. The manufacturer states it meets BS 3261:1973 for sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles, and publishes a DIN 51130:2010 ramp classification of R11 at 24.7° corrected with BS 7976-2:2002 pendulum values of PTV 57 dry and PTV 47 wet — both clear of the 36 PTV mark the UK Slip Resistance Group associates with low slip potential.
Two channels across a 91mm tread
A 91mm tread plate takes two runs of insert side by side, split by a slim bare-metal rib, so the grip carries back under the whole footfall instead of stopping an inch behind the nose. On a deep step or a stair taking heavy two-way traffic that is the difference worth paying for. The channel is a heavy duty 5mm gauge section, sized for thick commercial floor coverings.
The glow strip is chemistry, not electronics
The manufacturer identifies the photoluminescent element as europium-doped strontium aluminate, emitting green at a peak wavelength of 520nm, with afterglow brightness of 455 mcd/m² ten minutes after excitation, a highly visible afterglow lasting more than 600 minutes and a total afterglow duration of more than 3,000 minutes before it decays to 0.32 mcd/m². There is no wiring, no driver and no battery, so it cannot fail in a power cut.
Where it is used
External access steps, entrance stairways, fire escapes and covered walkways — anywhere the stair is exposed to rain, grit and temperature swing. It works equally well inside on wet-prone internal stairs: plant rooms, kitchens, pool surrounds, loading bays and back-of-house circulation. The manufacturer states the insert resists ultraviolet light, oil, grease, petrol, salt, dilute acids and alkalis and common household chemicals and detergents; organic solvents will soften it.

Choosing the right option
Length first: 2.46m, 2.77m and 3.22m are the manufacturer's stock extrusion lengths, and 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m are cut from the same profile for shorter flights. Measure the full tread width, order the next length up and cut back on site.
Then colour. Contrast guidance is expressed as a difference in Light Reflectance Value between the step edge and the surrounding floor. Both channels take the same colour, and there are four: against a dark surface White at 82.7 gives the widest separation, and Yellow at 46.1 reads strongly in daylight; against pale concrete or stone, Black at 4.8 or Dolphin Grey at 18.2 do the same in reverse. Work the difference out against your own step rather than choosing on appearance. If you need the eleven-colour palette rather than these four, our standard-insert 91x32mm profile carries it — but that one is rated for internal use only.
Installation, use and care
Check the step is dry, clean, level and free of debris. Mark and drill your fixing positions and plug the step. Bed the nosing on a suitable adhesive, set it onto the step, then screw down and fit both inserts or insert pips over the screw heads. A wide profile like this wants fixings at closer centres than a narrow one — do not rely on adhesive alone across a 91mm plate, particularly outside.
The pyramid surface holds more dirt than a smooth floor, so it needs a brush rather than a mop. The manufacturer recommends scrubbing with a bristle brush and warm soapy water, or a commercial scrubber-drier; rinse with clean water and let it dry before traffic returns. The aluminium can be brought back with steel wool or a cloth. Do not use solvent cleaners on either part.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really fit this outside?
Yes. The manufacturer's selection guide lists the Tredsafe insert as suitable for external use, and the supplier's own data sheet records it as suitable for indoor and outdoor environments. That is the specific reason to choose this profile over our standard-insert version, which the same guide rates internal only.
How is this different from your other 91x32mm nosing?
Same aluminium section, different insert. This page is the Tredsafe version: four colours, coarse quartz-loaded surface, rated for outdoors, R11 at 24.7° with PTV 57 dry / 47 wet. The other page is the standard PVC version: eleven colours, smooth surface, internal only, R11 at 22.9° with PTV 66 dry / 54 wet.
Does this take an LED strip?
No. There is no lighting channel and no electrical component of any kind. The glowing edge is a photoluminescent strip that stores ambient light and re-emits it once the area goes dark.
Will it fit a stair with a sloping riser?
Not flush. This is a straight-edge profile with a vertical back leg. On a raked riser, choose one of our raked-back profiles instead.
Ordering and delivery
Each length is supplied as a single cut piece — order one per step and allow a little extra on the width for trimming. All four insert colours are available in all six lengths, and UK delivery is one flat rate whatever the order size. If you need a length we do not list, or an anodised finish, get in touch before ordering.
