Description
On a busy stair, the leading edge of each step takes the hardest wear and causes the most falls. Carpet frays there first, and vinyl lifts there first. This heavy-duty chevron stair nosing is built for that edge. It is a 5mm-gauge extruded aluminium profile that wraps the step: a 91mm top face carries two 38mm x 4mm slip-resistant PVC inserts side by side, and a 70mm face covers the top of the riser. The riser face is angled in a shallow chevron, which is where the name comes from. It suits contractors, facilities managers and flooring fitters who are specifying stair edges for offices, schools, healthcare buildings, retail units and communal stairs in flats. Each length is 3.22m and can be cut on site. There are nine metal finishes and nineteen insert colours.
Why it works
A 5mm heavyweight section
At 5mm gauge this profile is much thicker than the light trims sold for domestic stairs. A thicker wall takes impacts from trolleys, heels and dropped loads without denting, and it stays straight across a wide step instead of bowing between fixings. That makes it the right choice where a nosing has to last as long as the floor covering around it.
Two inserts for a wide contrasting band
Two channels hold 38mm x 4mm PVC inserts across the 91mm top, giving a deep slip-resistant contact band where the foot lands. Because the inserts come in colours measured for light reflectance value (LRV), they also give the visual contrast that Approved Document M and BS 8300 ask for on stair nosings. A worn insert can be replaced without lifting the aluminium.
A chevron riser face that protects the carpet edge
The 70mm riser face drops over the step front and angles back near its bottom edge, so it finishes close to the riser covering and the edge of a medium-weight carpet or smooth floor covering tucks in below it. The 70mm face is the deepest in this range and covers the most riser, protecting the riser covering where trolleys and feet strike hardest.

Where it's used
Typical settings are office and school staircases in contract carpet tiles, hospital and care-home stairs in smooth safety flooring, shopping centre and leisure stairs, and communal stairwells in residential blocks. The manufacturer states that the profile is for medium-weight carpets and heavy-duty smooth flooring. It is an interior product; for external steps, choose an exterior-rated nosing.

Choosing the right option
Insert colour. Choose the insert by contrast with the floor, not by looks alone. Guidance under Approved Document M and BS 8300 is a difference of at least 30 LRV points between the nosing insert and the surrounding floor. These are the manufacturer's stated LRVs: Premium Black 4.48, Dark Blue 5.06, Dark Green 7.96, Blue 9.76, Brown 9.79, Dark Grey 10.16, Mid Grey 17.69, Red 17.70, Mid Brown 21.02, Sage Green 30.13, Apple Green 30.40, Beige 32.64, Polar Grey 42.00, Sahara 49.24, Aura 53.00, Yellow 55.35, Oyster 58.10 and White 73.69. Dark carpet suits a light insert; a light floor suits Premium Black or Dark Grey. Hazard (black and yellow) costs extra.
Finish. Mill is untreated and cheapest. Satin and dark finishes suit most interiors. Bright Polished and Mirrorflect are for feature stairs.
Fixing. Lengths are supplied plain for bedding in adhesive. A Peel & Stick version with factory-applied tape is available on request.
Installation, use & care
Measure each step and cut the nosing with a fine-toothed saw suitable for aluminium, then deburr the cut. The step edge must be sound, clean, dry and square. Bed each length in a suitable stair-nosing adhesive, adding mechanical fixings if your specification or the substrate calls for them, and press it down firmly along the full length. Clean with a damp mop and neutral detergent, and avoid abrasive pads on polished finishes.
