Description
A tiled staircase needs its step edges protected before the tiles go down, not after. This is the Dural Durastep Standard, a tile-in aluminium stair nosing with a 25mm replaceable PVC anti-slip tread, made in 9mm and 11mm heights to match the tile and supplied in 2.5m lengths with a black or grey tread. Specify it when a stair is being tiled from new or retiled: the perforated aluminium leg is bedded in the adhesive under the tread tile, so the finished step has a protected edge, a contrasting non-slip strip and nothing screwed on afterwards.
Why it works
It is anchored in the tile bed, not on top of it. The aluminium carrier has a perforated leg that sits in the adhesive beneath the tread tile, with the tile laid up to a vertical aluminium edge. Adhesive keys through the holes, so the nosing is held along its whole length and the fragile tile arris is replaced by metal. Surface-mounted nosings rely on screws or bonding to the finished surface; this one cannot lift because it is part of the floor build-up.
The wear part is replaceable. The ribbed PVC tread clips into the aluminium carrier. When it wears or the colour scheme changes, the old tread is levered out and a new one pressed in, without disturbing the tiles.
Height is matched to the tile. The 9mm and 11mm versions correspond to the finished tile thickness, so the tread sits flush with the tile surface rather than standing proud or leaving a lip.
Where it is used
Tiled and stone-faced stairs in homes, entrance halls, shops, hotels, offices and care settings, wherever porcelain, ceramic or natural stone is being laid on the treads. It is an internal profile; for exposed external steps ask us before ordering, as no external rating is published for the tread.

Choosing the right option
Height follows the tile. Measure the tile thickness and choose the 9mm profile for tiles up to about 9mm and the 11mm profile for thicker porcelain and stone. If the tile falls between the two, the taller profile with a slightly thicker adhesive bed is the usual answer; a tread that finishes a fraction below the tile is safer than one that stands above it.
Colour is about contrast as much as taste. Approved Document M asks for step nosings to be visually apparent, and a black tread on a pale tile does that well; grey suits darker or mid-tone tiles and a quieter look. Both treads are the same ribbed PVC.
Quantity is one 2.5m length per step for stairs up to 2.5m wide, cut to length on site. Order a spare tread length if you want replacements to hand later.
Installation, use and care
Set out the nosing on the step edge, comb adhesive across the tread and press the perforated leg into it, then lay the tread tile up to the aluminium edge and tile the riser beneath the nose. Fit or refit the PVC tread once the adhesive has set and the joints are grouted. Cut the aluminium with a fine-tooth hacksaw or mitre saw and deburr the ends. Clean the tread with a neutral cleaner; avoid solvents on the PVC.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit this to a stair that is already tiled?
No. The anchoring leg has to go under the tiles, so this profile is for new tiling or retiling. For a finished stair, choose one of our surface-mounted aluminium nosings instead.
Which height do I need?
The one that matches your tile thickness: 9mm or 11mm. Check the tile before ordering rather than the adhesive bed.
Can I replace the tread later?
Yes. The PVC tread clips into the carrier and can be changed without lifting any tiles. Ask us for replacement treads.
Is a slip rating published?
Not for this line. The tread is ribbed PVC, but if your project needs a stated slip value, contact us before you order.
Ordering and delivery
Choose the height and tread colour; the price is per 2.5m length and lengths are dispatched uncut for trimming on site. Order a sample if you want to check the tread colour against your tile. Call 01282 270 010 or email sales@stairnosingsuk.co.uk if you are unsure which height suits your tile.
