Aluminium Stair Nosing 28 x 14.5mm Push-In Edge Trim for 5mm LVT

If you are taking 5mm luxury vinyl up a staircase, the step edge is where the job is won or lost. A plank cut flush and left proud of the riser chips within weeks, lifts at the corner and becomes a trip point. This anodised aluminium nosing deals with that in a single pass: the profile screws down onto the tread, the plank pushes into the 8mm channel that runs along its front edge, and the fixings sit hidden underneath the flooring. It suits click and dry-back LVT at 5mm thickness, and comes in 0.9m lengths for a standard domestic stair or 2.7m for wider flights, landings and step-downs, in four anodised finishes.

Why it works

The channel does the work, not the adhesive

Most budget step edgings are a flat strip stuck over the top of the flooring, so the plank edge is still exposed underneath and the trim itself is only as good as the tape holding it. This profile is shaped differently. An 8mm wide, 5mm deep return runs the length of the nose, and the vinyl plank slides into it, so the cut edge of the flooring is enclosed on three sides rather than left open to foot traffic. The aluminium takes the wear instead of the vinyl.

Fixings that disappear

The base plate is screwed through to the tread before the flooring goes down. Once the plank is pushed into the channel it covers the screw heads completely — the supplier describes the result as having no visible screws or plugs. That matters on a staircase, where fixings sit at eye level on the way down and any exposed screw head is both a snag risk and the first thing to look tired.

Anodised, not painted

The finish is an anodised layer grown into the aluminium rather than a coating sprayed on top, so it does not chip back to bare metal the way a painted trim does on a stair nose. This is an interior profile: the supplier publishes no exterior or wet-area rating for it.

Domestic staircases refitted in click LVT, which is the bulk of what this profile does. Flat and apartment conversions where the same vinyl runs through the hallway and up the stairs. Landings and single step-downs between rooms. Light commercial work — small offices, surgeries, salons and holiday lets — where the stair sees regular but not heavy public traffic. It is a finishing trim for interior stairs, not a specification anti-slip nosing for a public building.

Choosing the right option

Start with the flooring, not the stair. This profile is cut for 5mm LVT — if your planks are 4mm or 6mm they will not seat properly in the channel, and you want a different profile depth rather than a packing shim.

Then the length. A standard UK domestic tread is around 850–900mm, so the 0.9m bar covers one step with little to trim. Measure your own treads first: if they run wider than 900mm, take the 2.7m length and cut it down rather than butt-joining two short pieces on one step, which is both visible and a weak point. The 2.7m bar is also the better buy for a straight flight — three treads per bar, colour-matched across all three.

On finish, silver is the safe default against grey and light oak planks. Gold and champagne warm up against mid and dark oak. Black reads as a deliberate shadow line and works well with dark planks or a contemporary painted riser.

Installation, use and care

Fit the nosing before the flooring. Set the profile on the bare tread with its nose over the step edge, mark and drill the fixing holes, then screw the base plate down using the screws supplied. Work along the flight checking each nose sits level with the one below. Push the plank into the channel and lay the rest of the tread back from it. Cut lengths with a fine-tooth hacksaw or a mitre saw with a non-ferrous blade, and file the cut end.

Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral floor cleaner. Avoid abrasive creams, scouring pads and acidic or alkaline cleaners, all of which will dull an anodised surface.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit my flooring?

Only if your LVT is 5mm thick. The channel is 5mm deep and 8mm wide, so a thinner plank will rattle in it and a thicker one will not go in. Measure a spare plank with a vernier or a steel rule before ordering — nominal thicknesses are not always what arrives.

Does it go on before or after the flooring?

Before. The profile screws down to the bare tread first, then the plank slides into the channel and hides the screw heads. Fitting it afterwards means either lifting the front plank or surface-fixing through the top, which defeats the hidden-fixing design.

Is it self-adhesive?

No. The supplier states it is not self-adhesive and supplies fixing screws with each length. It is designed to be mechanically fixed through the base plate, which is what allows it to take repeated foot traffic on a stair nose.

Can I use it outside, or on a wet stair?

No. This is an interior profile and no exterior, wet-area or slip-resistance rating is published for it. For an external step or a stair with a specified slip rating, use a nosing with a bonded anti-slip insert instead and we can point you at one.

How many do I need?

One length per tread if you are using the 0.9m bars. On 2.7m lengths, allow one bar per three treads and add a spare — cutting always costs a little more than the arithmetic suggests.
