Description
If you are finishing a square-edged step and need the edge to survive traffic without becoming a trip hazard, this is the profile that does it. The Effector A34 is a 35mm x 35mm anodised aluminium angle that wraps the front of the tread and the top of the riser in one piece, giving you a hard-wearing nose where the floor covering would otherwise wear through first. It suits a fresh installation as well as a refurbishment where the step edge is already chipped or worn. Specify it screw-fixed, with the plugs and screws supplied, or self-adhesive where drilling is not an option, in five anodised finishes and two lengths.
Why it works
Ribbed on both faces
The manufacturer states that the A34 is ribbed on the tread and the riser, not only across the top. That matters on a stair. The tread ribs give you grip underfoot, and the riser ribs catch the light differently from the surrounding finish, so the step edge reads as a defined line instead of disappearing into the floor covering. On a flight where every step looks the same, that visual definition does as much work as the texture does.
Anodised rather than coated
The finish is an anodised layer grown into the surface of the aluminium rather than a coating sitting on top of it. It will not chip away from the leading edge the way a painted or powder-coated trim does, which is the failure you normally see first on a stair nose after a couple of winters of grit and footfall.
One extrusion over the corner
A 35 x 35 angle covers the vulnerable corner in a single piece, so no joint sits where the load lands. It also conceals a step edge that is already damaged, which is usually why a refurbishment specifies a nosing at all.
Where it's used
The manufacturer lists the profile as compatible with wood, laminate, tile and vinyl stair surfaces, and its own fitting photographs show it run over carpet. In practice that covers most internal flights: domestic staircases, office and communal stairwells, retail and showroom steps, and refurbishment work in schools and healthcare buildings where a worn edge needs covering without closing the staircase. The 900mm length suits a single step; the 2.7m is cut down on site.

Choosing the right option
Length. 900mm covers a single standard-width domestic step; 2.7m is the run length and is normally cut into three. Order by total linear metres and allow for the cuts, rather than counting steps.
Fixing. The screw-fixed version arrives with plugs and screws and is the one to specify for a public or commercial stair, anywhere the nosing will take a trolley wheel, or on a substrate you cannot rely on for adhesion. The self-adhesive version uses a factory-applied adhesive and suits a domestic refurbishment, a rented property, or any step you would rather not drill. Both share the same profile and the same five finishes, so the choice is purely about how it is held down.
Finish. Silver and Inox read as neutral metal. Gold and Champagne warm the edge. Black gives the strongest contrast against a pale covering, which is the one to pick if step definition is the point.
Installation, use and care
Measure the width of the step and cut the profile with a hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous blade, then deburr the cut end. For the screw-fixed version, drill and plug the substrate and countersink the screws into the pre-formed holes. For the self-adhesive version the substrate must be clean, dry and sound – dust or a loose surface is what causes an adhesive nosing to lift at the nose within a few months. Clean with a damp cloth and a neutral detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners on the anodised surface; both will dull it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the screw-fix and self-adhesive versions?
Only the fixing method. The screw-fixed version is supplied with plugs and screws and seats into pre-formed holes along the tread. The self-adhesive version has a factory-applied adhesive backing and needs no drilling. The extrusion, the dimensions and the five finishes are identical across both.
Does this nosing carry a slip resistance rating?
No slip resistance figure – no pendulum value, R rating or PTV – is published for this line by the manufacturer, so we do not quote one. The anti-slip function comes from the ribbed tread and riser. If a project needs a tested and certified figure, ask us and we will point you at a profile that has one.
Can it be cut to length?
Yes. Both lengths cut readily with a hacksaw or a mitre saw with a non-ferrous blade. The 2.7m length is normally cut into three domestic-width steps. Deburr the cut end before fitting so the edge is not left sharp.
Is it suitable for outdoor steps?
We specify it for internal use. The manufacturer does not publish an external rating for the profile, and while anodised aluminium resists corrosion well, we will not claim a weather performance that has not been stated. For exterior steps ask us for a profile rated for the job.
Ordering and delivery
Select your length, finish and fixing method above; each combination is priced individually. Order by total linear metres and allow for cutting waste. If you need a quantity for a whole building, or want to check a finish against a floor sample first, contact us and we will help you specify it.
