If you are upgrading a staircase that already has its floor covering down, this is the profile that does the job without pulling anything up. It is a 66mm wide extruded aluminium nosing, 29mm deep and 3mm thick, with a ramp-shaped front face and a PVC anti-slip insert bonded in at the step nose. You screw it down on top of the finished tread. That makes it the standard choice for refurbishment work, safety upgrades ordered after a building inspection, and any stair where lifting the laminate, vinyl or carpet to fit a tile-in nosing is not worth the disruption.

Why it works

The grip sits where people actually slip

Slips on stairs happen at the nose of the tread, in the moment the foot loads onto the edge. The PVC insert sits in the ramp face at exactly that point and is rated R11, putting the grip where it is needed. It is bonded during manufacture rather than glued on afterwards, so it cannot lift, peel or work loose under traffic — the usual failure mode of stick-on anti-slip tape.

The ramp profile keeps the transition shallow

A square-edged nosing sitting proud of a finished floor creates a lip. The ramp face angles down to the floor surface instead, so the foot is guided onto the tread and trolleys, cases and wheeled equipment roll over it. At 3mm gauge the extrusion holds its shape under heavy commercial traffic without needing a deeper section.

Colour does structural work

Visual contrast at the step edge is what makes a stair readable to someone with poor sight, and the insert colour is how you get it: a dark insert on a pale floor, or a pale insert on a dark one. Red and Yellow are the conventional high-visibility choices in schools and public buildings; Black and Grey are the usual domestic and contemporary commercial picks.

Choosing the right option

Measure the tread at its widest point and order the next length up, then cut down on site with a metal saw or angle grinder and file the cut edge. A standard domestic staircase is usually 860–900mm wide, so 1000mm is the common household choice; 1500mm and up covers school corridors, offices and public stairs. The 3000mm is cut to order from the manufacturer's 3200mm bar, so allow a little extra lead time on that length.

Check the depth before you order. This profile covers 29mm of tread. If you need a deeper cover for a worn or chipped step edge, the DDA version of the same profile gives 53mm, and a 94mm double-channel version exists for wide commercial treads — both are listed separately. For contrast, hold the insert colour against your actual floor rather than a screen: photographs shift beige and grey badly.

Installation, use and care

Cut to length, then dry-position the nosing on the tread with its front face flush to the step edge. Mark through the pre-drilled holes, drill pilot holes, and fix down using the supplied screws — on concrete or stone treads, swap in masonry anchors sized to the substrate. Drive the screws flush and press in the colour-matched cover pips to finish. Afterwards, sweep or damp-mop as you would the surrounding floor; do not use solvent or abrasive cleaners on the PVC insert, which will dull the grip texture.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a tile-in nosing?

This one fits on top of a finished floor and screws down. A tile-in nosing is bedded into the tile adhesive while the floor is being laid, which means lifting the covering if the stair is already finished. Use this profile for existing staircases.

Can the insert be replaced when it wears?

No. The PVC is bonded in during manufacture and is not a removable strip. That is what stops it lifting in service, but it does mean a worn nosing is replaced as a whole unit rather than re-inserted.

Which insert colour should I pick for safety compliance?

Whichever contrasts most with your floor. Red and Yellow are the conventional choices in schools and public buildings. Contrast is judged against the actual finished floor, so confirm the pairing with your building control officer for a formal compliance case.

Are fixings supplied?

Yes. Screws come with every nosing, along with colour-matched cover pips that cap the heads for a clean finish. On concrete or stone treads you may prefer masonry anchors sized to your substrate instead.

What length do I need?

One nosing per tread, cut to the width of that tread. Measure at the widest point, order the next length up, and count your steps — a 13-step domestic flight needs 13 nosings.
