Description

Wet timber walkways, ramps and jetties lose their grip long before the boards look worn. These flat anti-slip plates fix grip in place where people actually walk. Each one is a 1.6mm aluminium plate with a coarse grit walking surface. It lies flat on the boards and is screwed straight down, with no adhesive to fail. Choose from three sizes: a slim 63 x 635mm strip, a 115 x 635mm plate, or a 115 x 1000mm plate for wider walkways. Every size comes in nine colours. They are bought by facilities managers, landlords, schools, angling clubs, garden centres and decking installers who need a repair that survives a British winter.

Why a flat screw-down plate works

Mechanical fixing on surfaces that defeat tape

Self-adhesive anti-slip tape only bonds to a clean, dry, sound surface, and outdoor decking is rarely all three. These plates screw down through pre-drilled holes, so they hold on sodden or weathered timber, composite boards and flaking or saturated concrete. Those are the surfaces where tape lifts at the corners within months.

Flat and low profile

The plate is a single flat sheet, so it suits the middle of a walkway, a ramp or a landing, where an L-shaped nosing would not fit. The corners are rounded to a 10mm radius and the edges sit close to the board, which keeps the trip edge to a minimum.

Grit you can see and feel

Coarse mineral grit covers almost the whole top face, framed by a narrow bare aluminium margin round the fixing holes. The aluminium will not rust or stain pale timber.

Where they are used

Typical sites include timber ramps and fire-exit routes behind shops and schools, angling platforms, footbridges on golf courses and nature trails, care home garden ramps, boardwalks through garden centres, loading ramps in builders' yards, and rooftop and courtyard decking. They also suit icy concrete paths and old concrete where tape no longer bonds.

Choosing the right size and colour

Size. The 63 x 635mm strip suits narrow treads and steps, and close spacing on short ramps. The 115 x 635mm plate is the general-purpose choice for walkways, jetties and landings. The 115 x 1000mm plate covers the full width of most garden and commercial walkways in one piece, with fewer joints and fewer plates to fit. On walkways and ramps, fit the plates across the direction of travel, about 300-400mm apart, so every stride lands on or near grit.

Colour. On public and workplace routes, choose for contrast first. Yellow, white or hazard stripe on dark timber is the most visible, and hazard stripe is the usual choice for loading areas and changes of level. Red suits fire-exit routes. Black, brown, green and grey blend in where grip matters more than marking, for example on private gardens and fishing platforms.

For the front edge of steps, pair these plates with our L-shaped decking step nosing plate in the same colour.

Installation, use and care

Brush off moss and algae and let the surface dry. Position the plate, then mark and drill pilot holes through every fixing hole. On timber and composite, use stainless steel countersunk wood screws, about 4mm x 30mm. On concrete, use plugs with stainless screws. Tighten until the heads sit flush, without bowing the plate. To clean, sweep the plates and wash them with water and mild detergent. Near sea water, aluminium can corrode through galvanic reaction, so use stainless fixings on coastal sites and check the plates every season.

Frequently asked questions

Are screws included?

No. The right fixing depends on the surface, so screws are not supplied. Use stainless countersunk wood screws for timber and composite, and plugs with stainless screws for concrete or stone.

Can I cut a plate shorter?

Yes. Cut it with a fine-tooth metal blade, file the cut end smooth and drill a new 4mm fixing hole about 10mm in from the new end, so the end can't lift.

How many plates do I need for a walkway?

Divide the walkway length by your spacing (300-400mm is typical) and add one. On a walkway up to about 1m wide, use one 115 x 1000mm plate per row. On wider decks, use two shorter plates end to end.
