Description
Cold, hard handrails that turn slick the moment a hand is damp are a genuine trip hazard on stairs, ramps and fire escapes — and under the UK Building Regulations Act 2000 (Part M1 & M2), a handrail that is not slip resistant and not cold to the touch is non-compliant. Handrail grip tape solves both problems in a single wrap: it restores grip on a smooth or worn rail and stops the cold-metal shock that makes people snatch their hand away exactly when they need to hold on.
Why it works
The tape is built from a PVC upper layer laminated to a PET base, finished with a symmetrical dimpled texture rather than an abrasive grit. That matters, because a harsh grit surface tears bare hands and gloves over a working day, while the dimpled pattern grips wet palms without abrading skin. The plastic construction feels warm and rubber-like against the hand and does not retain water, so it will not freeze into a hard, glass-like shell on an exterior stair rail through a UK winter — a common failure of foam-backed alternatives. The pressure-sensitive adhesive is rated for wrap installation around curved and angled tubular rails, and the material has passed FAR 25.853 flame and burn testing for use inside commercial aircraft, which is a useful proxy for how it performs under heavy repeated hand contact in a public building.
- Warm to the touch – insulating PVC/PET laminate stops the cold-metal shock that makes hands let go
- Won't freeze solid – doesn't retain water, so exterior rails stay usable through winter
- Non-abrasive grip – dimpled texture, not grit, so it doesn't tear bare hands or gloves
- Meets Part M – satisfies the slip-resistant and not-cold-to-touch requirements of Approved Document M
- Fire-tested laminate – passed FAR 25.853 flame and burn criteria for aircraft interiors
Where it's used
This tape is specified on internal and external stair handrails in schools, care homes, offices and retail units bringing existing rails up to Part M, and on fire escape and external access stair rails where a cold, wet tube becomes genuinely dangerous. It is equally at home on a domestic stair handrail that has always felt slippery in socks.

Choosing the right option
Handrail grip tape is applied by wrapping it around the rail at an angle rather than laying a flat strip along it, so the width you need depends on the diameter of the tube, not the length of the rail. As a working guide, the 25mm width suits slim 25-32mm domestic stair rails; 50mm is the most common choice for standard 40-50mm commercial tube handrail; and the 100mm width is for box-section or larger 50mm+ rails, or where a lower, more relaxed wrap angle is wanted for comfort. Each 18.3m roll wraps considerably further than its length suggests once applied on the angle — as a rough guide, expect one roll to cover several metres of handrail depending on width and wrap pitch. If your rail falls between sizes or you need a custom width from 12mm to 1,346mm, this can be made to order; contact us with your rail diameter before ordering.
Installation, use & care
Clean the rail with an isopropyl alcohol cleaner to remove grease, polish or old adhesive residue, and make sure it is fully dry. Starting at one end, wrap the tape around the rail at a steady angle, overlapping each turn slightly, and press down firmly as you go — a decorating roller helps bed the adhesive evenly. The rail can be used immediately, though full adhesive strength develops over the following 48 hours. Because the surface is non-abrasive, it can be cleaned with any normal method; there is no grit to clog with polish or hand cream.
FAQ
Will it make the handrail feel bulky? No — the tape adds only a thin laminate layer and follows the profile of the rail closely once wrapped.
Can it go on an outdoor fire escape rail? Yes, it is rated for exterior use and specifically designed not to retain water or freeze.
Does it need a primer? No primer is needed on a clean, dry metal or painted rail; for very porous or badly pitted surfaces contact us for advice.
Can I get it in a colour other than black? This listing is black; contact our sales team for other colours or custom width runs.
